OCU at Southwestern Assemblies of God men's basketball preview

Stars meet Southwestern Assemblies of God in clash of top 25-ranked teams

Jamil Donovan ranks second in NAIA Division I with a 3.38-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University travels to Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) in a showdown of top 25-ranked squads and the third- and fourth-place teams in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City drubbed USAO 88-75 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (15-7, 11-5 SAC play) improved to 8-6 when facing a halftime deficit and trailed at halftime for the fourth consecutive game.
R.J. McGhee, a 6-foot-6 senior from Baton Rouge, La., totaled 20 points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals and two 3-pointers Saturday. McGhee supplies OCU with 15.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.40 steals a game plus 38.5 percent shooting from 3-point territory. His 83.1 percent free-throw percentage ranks 19th in the NAIA.
Tharone Chilton, a 6-2 senior from Tulsa, Okla., delivered 19 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals. He became the SAC player of the week after posting 25.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 2.50 steals a contest last week. Chilton produces 17.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.59 steals per game plus 38.3 percent 3-point shooting. Gary Inglett, a 6-6 senior from Ardmore, Okla., had 19 points and 16 rebounds for his league-leading 10th double-double this season. He shot 8-for-11 from the field. Inglett averages 19.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists a game with a 54.4 percent field-goal percentage. Inglett ranks third in the NAIA at 8.0 defensive rebounds per contest.
Oklahoma City's 17.0 assists team average and 74.6 percent free-throw percentage rank sixth among NAIA Division I. To see how OCU ranks statistically in the NAIA, click here.
OCU moved to 23rd in the latest national rankings. The Stars were projected to finish fourth in the SAC by league coaches. Oklahoma City owns six NAIA national championships won in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
Southwestern Assemblies of God leads the all-time series 2-1. OCU picked up its first win over SAGU 65-62 on Jan. 22 at Abe Lemons Arena. Chilton turned in 24 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
 
ABOUT THE LIONS: Southwestern Assemblies of God edged John Brown (Ark.) 69-66 on Saturday in Siloam Springs, Ark. Jonathan Walter's 3-pointer with three seconds made the difference for Southwestern Assemblies (20-8, 10-6 SAC).
Walter, a 6-4 senior, spearheaded his team with 25 points, six rebounds, three steals and six 3-pointers. Walter accumulates 15.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.07 steals a game while knocking down 37.4 percent from 3-point range. Rishaad Alexander, a 5-10 junior, had 17 points, four assists and three treys. Alexander averages 13.9 points, 2.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.33 steals per game while hitting 41.6 percent of his 3-point shots.
Southwestern Assemblies of God took the 24th spot in the last national poll. The Lions top the NAIA with 381 steals on the season. SAGU was picked to finish fifth in the SAC in the preseason.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps owns a 60-45 record in his fourth season as OCU coach. He led the Stars to the SAC Tournament title and an NAIA Division I Tournament appearance in 2012-13. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of five conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 24-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Donnie Bostwick has a 106-30 record in his fourth season with Southwestern Assemblies of God. Bostwick led the Lions to the 2013 NAIA Division I Tournament title game. He also won the 2009 NAIA Division II championship with Oklahoma Wesleyan, where he went 120-20 in four seasons.
