Stars rally past St. Gregory's 94-85

OCU erases 10-point or more deficit to win for fifth time this season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University surged past St. Gregory's 94-85 on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Tharone Chilton, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., delivered 31 points, 10 assists and three steals for Oklahoma City. The Stars, ranked 24th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, improved to 14-7, 10-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Chilton shot 9-for-14 from the field and 12-for-13 from the free-throw line while becoming the first Star to notch back-to-back 30-point outings since Willie Irick on Dec. 8-Dec. 30, 2007.
OCU's Gary Inglett, a senior from Ardmore, Okla., posted his ninth double-double of the season with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Ivan Jelencic, a senior from Sibenik, Croatia, picked up his first double-double as a Star with 18 points and 11 rebounds, both season highs.
Evan White, a junior from San Antonio, added 17 points for Oklahoma City as its starters scored 92 of the Stars' 94 points. OCU's starting five combined to shoot 58.2 percent from the field. The Stars dished out 21 assists.
"I'm really impressed with the assist situation," OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. "That means Tharone's being unselfish and distributing the ball. We got back to sharing the ball like we had been. We had a couple of games we had been under 20 assists. We got back up there. Tharone, he's played really well."
The Stars erased an 11-point first-half deficit to pick up their eighth victory in the last nine contests. OCU hit 55.6 percent from the floor while holding St. Gregory's to a 37.8 field-goal percentage in the second period. Oklahoma City won for the fifth time this season after facing a double-digit deficit.
"I think our preseason gave us an opportunity to experience that," Phelps said. "We learned early in the preseason that we have to be patient, maintain our defense and really more than anything believe in each other and value the basketball as much as anything."
In the second half, the game featured six ties before Oklahoma City broke loose with six consecutive points. Chilton assisted Inglett on a layup, then sank four free throws to give the Stars a 77-71 advantage with 3:45 left in the game.
OCU climbed into the lead 51-49 with a 7-2 run to open the second half. Jelencic had a lay-in to put the Stars in front with 16:58 left.
Marty Wilkerson staked St. Gregory's to a 30-19 lead on free throws with 7:31 to go in the first half. St. Gregory's connected on 7 of its first 10 shots from the field. Chilton's 3-point play cut St. Gregory's lead to 36-34 at the 3:34 mark.
Wilkerson finished with 13 points after he had entered with a league-high 21.0-points-per-game scoring average.
"For a while there, I felt like we weren't really guarding because it seemed like every time Marty Wilkerson lifted up that would be an automatic 3," Phelps said. "I think Jonathan Reed and Jamil Donovan really locked in and focused on the scouting report, and it really benefited us."
The Stars host USAO at 5 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
