OCU at Oklahoma Baptist women's basketball preview

Stars look to extend 18-game win streak

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University travels to Oklahoma Baptist for a matchup of top-10 ranked Sooner Athletic Conference opponents.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City escaped 25th-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) 80-78 Thursday in Plainview, Texas. The Stars (18-1, 13-0 SAC) held Wayland Baptist scoreless in the last 1:22 of play.
Ouleymatou Coulibaly and Marisha Wallace both provided OCU with double-doubles. Coulibaly, a 6-2 senior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa, led the Stars in scoring with 23 points and ripped down 11 rebounds. She is second on the team in scoring with 16.6 points and leads the team in rebounds with 9.5 a game.
Wallace, a 6-foot-2 senior from Midwest City, Okla., recorded season highs with 21 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks against WBU. She scores 14.3 points and pulls down 7.8 rebounds a game off the pine for OCU. Rateska Brown, a 5-6 senior from Alvin, S.C., provided the Stars with 15 points and three assists. She leads the team in scoring with 19.8 points while grabbing 4.5 rebounds and dishing 2.6 assists a game.
Oklahoma City holds the second spot in the NAIA Division I rankings for the seventh consecutive week. OCU continued streaks of being ranked in the top 10 in every poll since March 11, 2009 and making the top 25 for the 186th consecutive time since 1999-2000. OCU owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014. SAC coaches predicted the Stars would win the league title. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 15 times, including the last five in a row.
OCU boasts a 47-23 record in the all-time series with Oklahoma Baptist. The Stars took down the Bison 86-78 on Jan. 17 at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU had six players score in double figures in the game.
 
ABOUT THE LADY BISON: Oklahoma Baptist defeated Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 64-46 Thursday in Waxahachie, Texas. The Lady Bison (18-4, 10-3 SAC) are 6-1 since the loss against the Stars.
Chatity Fowler, a 5-8 senior, led the charge for OBU with 13 points seven rebounds and three steals. Fowler leads the team in points and steals with 13.3 and 1.3 respectively. Marida Lewis, a 5-6 senior, provided the Lady Bison with 12 points and six rebounds off the bench. Lewis was well about her average of 6.5 points and 3.4 rebounds a game.
No. 10th-ranked OBU was picked to finish just behind OCU in the SAC preseason coaches' poll.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Latricia Trammell was the 2014 NAIA Division I Phyllis Holmes coach of the year. Trammell has a 73-9 record in her third season as OCU head coach. She guided the Stars to a 16-0 record in conference play in 2012-13. She was OCU assistant to Rob Edmisson in 2005-07, then became Western State (Colo.) head coach from 2007-12. Trammell's college head-coaching record is 138-85 in her eighth year. Trammell has coached six all-Americans and 23 all-conference selections, including two SAC players of the year, an SAC newcomer of the year, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the year and RMAC West Division freshman of the year. As an assistant at OCU, Trammell mentored the Stars' first WNBA draftee, Mariam Sy of the Washington Mystics, 10 all-conference choices, the SAC player of the year, SAC newcomer of the year and four all-Americans.
Casi Bays is in her third season as the Lady Bison head coach. She has a 48-21 record as the head coach at OBU. In her second season Bays was named Sooner Athletic Conference coach of the year after leading the Lady Bison to a 28-6 record, finishing second in the SAC regular season with a 17-3 conference record. The Lady Bison won the conference tournament for the first time in program history and returned to the NAIA Tournament after a three-year absence.
