Stars take on Wayland Baptist, tied for second in SAC standings

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University takes to the road for a showdown of top 25-ranked Sooner Athletic Conference foes against Wayland Baptist (Texas).

ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars ripped Southwestern Christian 100-70 on Saturday inside Abe Lemons Arena. OCU (17-1, 12-0 SAC) shot 50 percent or better from the field for the fifth time this season.
Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a 6-foot-2 senior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa, spearheaded OCU with 22 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Coulibaly shot 8-for-11 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line while recording her seventh double-double of 2014-15. She piles up 16.2 points and 9.4 rebounds a game while ranking fourth nationally in offensive rebounds per game (4.7).
Marisha Wallace, a 6-2 senior from Midwest City, Okla., produced 18 points and five rebounds in 14 minutes of playing time. She hit 7 of her 9 shots from the floor. Wallace provides the Stars with 13.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.09 steals a game. Rateska Brown, a 5-6 senior from Alvin, S.C., contributed 16 points, four assists and four 3-pointers. Brown averages 20.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.11 steals per game. Her 3.67 3-pointers per game ranks second in the NAIA.

Oklahoma City holds the second spot in the NAIA Division I rankings for the seventh consecutive week. OCU continued streaks of being ranked in the top 10 in every poll since March 11, 2009 and making the top 25 for the 186th consecutive time since 1999-2000. OCU owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014. SAC coaches predicted the Stars would win the league title. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 15 times, including the last five in a row.
Oklahoma City has a 35-19 record against Wayland Baptist. The Stars knocked off Wayland Baptist 86-74 on Dec. 6 in Oklahoma City. Brown accumulated 28 points, five assists, nine steals and six treys.

ABOUT THE FLYING QUEENS: Wayland Baptist hammered Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 84-60 on Saturday in Waxahachie, Texas. Wayland Baptist (14-8, 9-3 SAC) built a 36-21 advantage in bench points.
Gabby Gonzalez, a 5-5 sophomore, knocked in five 3s for 15 points. Gonzalez chips in 4.8 points per game and 38.2 percent shooting from 3-point range. LaTericka Anderson, a 5-10 senior, had 12 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. She averages 10.8 points and 8.7 rebounds this season.
Wayland Baptist broke into the national rankings for the first time this season at No. 25. Wayland ranks fifth in the NAIA with 46.5 rebounds per game as a team. SAC coaches expected the Flying Queens to take fourth in the league.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Latricia Trammell was the 2014 NAIA Division I Phyllis Holmes coach of the year. Trammell has a 72-9 record in her third season as OCU head coach. She guided the Stars to a 16-0 record in conference play in 2012-13. She was OCU assistant to Rob Edmisson in 2005-07, then became Western State (Colo.) head coach from 2007-12. Trammell's college head-coaching record is 137-85 in her eighth year. Trammell has coached six all-Americans and 23 all-conference selections, including two SAC players of the year, an SAC newcomer of the year, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the year and RMAC West Division freshman of the year. As an assistant at OCU, Trammell mentored the Stars' first WNBA draftee, Mariam Sy of the Washington Mystics, 10 all-conference choices, the SAC player of the year, SAC newcomer of the year and four all-Americans.
Alesha Robertson-Ellis has a 34-20 record as Wayland Baptist coach. Ellis guided Wayland Baptist to an appearance in the NAIA Tournament last season. She took Lubbock Christian High School (Texas) to the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) Class 3A state championship prior to becoming the Wayland coach. The four-time all-state player helped Plainview High School (Texas) win three consecutive Class 4A state titles from 2001-03, then went on to play four seasons for Texas Tech.
