Stars hold off Southwestern Christian 77-72

OCU takes win in 2015-16 conference opener

BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University collected its first win at Pickens-Springer Gymnasium 77-72 over Southwestern Christian on Saturday.
Dorion Gigger, a junior from Oklahoma City, registered career highs with 26 points and 15 rebounds for the Stars. OCU moved to 3-1, 1-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.
Gigger hit 12 of his 16 shots from the field. Terence Bonhomme, a sophomore from St. Martinsville, La., produced 22 points and a career-best five 3-pointers, while Noel Allen, a senior from Gutenberg, N.J., provided Oklahoma City with 10 points, five rebounds and two steals.
The Stars overcame a seven-point first-half deficit. OCU built a 10-point lead early in the second period.
"That was a team win," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "Winning on the road is a very difficult thing to do especially in conference play. We played extremely hard, but we need to get more consistent with our play."
OCU limited its turnovers to 10 and outrebounded Southwestern Christian 38-29.
"Our interior play keeps getting better and better, and it showed tonight," Patel said. "Dorion did a great job on the glass. We have a short turnaround and will look at what we can improve on before we hit the floor Tuesday."
Mikel Parish's buckets cut Oklahoma City's advantage to 72-68 with a minute to go and 73-70 with 43 seconds left.
Bonhomme hit free throws with 35 seconds remaining, and Jamil Donovan sank a pair of free throws at the 16-second mark to salt away the Stars' win. Southwestern Christian had won its first two meetings against OCU on its home floor over the past two years.
Allen nailed a free throw that gave OCU its largest lead of the night at 72-62 with 2:54 left.
The Stars used a 9-2 run to tie the game 32-32 with 1:24 showing in the first half. Gigger had two baskets, while Lou Dunbar dropped in a trey during the OCU surge. Allen's jumper in the lane evened the score.
Jonathan Reed scored to put OCU on top 36-34 heading into halftime.
OCU takes on Texas Wesleyan at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
