OCU staves off Texas Wesleyan 72-67

Stars knock off nationally-ranked Texas Wesleyan

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University upended Texas Wesleyan 72-67 on Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Terence Bonhomme, a sophomore from St. Martinsville, La., powered the Stars with 22 points and five 3-pointers, which equaled the career high he set Saturday. OCU moved to 4-1, 2-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while Texas Wesleyan, ranked 20th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, went to 7-3, 1-1 in the SAC.
Lou Dunbar, a sophomore from Seabrook, Texas, tallied 13 points and three treys, while Noel Allen, a senior from Gutenberg, N.J., contributed 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field for the Stars.
Jamil Donovan, a senior from Oklahoma City, dished out a team-high six assists, and Dorion Gigger, a junior from Oklahoma City, pulled down a team-best nine rebounds for OCU.
Oklahoma City allowed Texas Wesleyan to shoot 39.3 percent from the field – including 37.0 percent in the first half. Texas Wesleyan had just entered the top 25 Tuesday after a 111-101 victory over Mid-America Christian, which was ranked 10th, on Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.
"I can't brag enough about our defensive effort," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "This was a team that averaged almost 90 points a game. We really took those last couple away. They got some good looks at the end I was not excited about at the end. They got a lot of athletes, a lot of great players on their team. That was a tough win. I thought our guys stepped up to the challenge."
B.J. Batts dropped in a trey that sliced OCU's advantage to 70-67 with nine seconds left. Bonhomme knocked down free throws with seven seconds showing for the final margin.
Allen provided OCU with a 57-37 advantage after back-to-back lay-ins with 11:31 remaining. The Stars had their biggest lead at that point.
Texas Wesleyan answered with a 15-0 run. Sam Akano had a layup in transition to cut the OCU lead to 57-52 with 6:15 left.
Bonhomme nailed a pair of 3s to boost the Stars' edge back into double digits at 69-59 at the 1:17 mark.
The Stars took command with a 14-0 run that spanned the end of the first half and early in the second period. Dunbar splashed home two 3-pointers in a row to cap the OCU onslaught for a 47-31 lead with 16:22 to go.
OCU shot 48.1 percent from the floor and upped that percentage to 54.2 percent in the second half.
"They are so good defensively early in the possession," Patel said of Texas Wesleyan. "Like most teams, once you get ball reversal, it helps open things up. You saw that we started swinging the ball and finding open shooters and getting it into our posts. Noel Allen had a couple back-to-back finishes, and after that, Lou Dunbar banged down a couple of 3-pointers. We started playing inside-out and getting some ball reversals. It really helped loosen things up for us."
OCU meets Philander Smith (Ark.) in a special day game 2 p.m. Dec. 22 at Abe Lemons Arena.
