Stars step into Sooner Athletic Conference schedule

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University looks to start Sooner Athletic Conference play with a road win against Southwestern Christian.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City dropped a 66-62 decision to College of the Ozarks (Mo.), ranked eighth in NAIA Division II, on Nov. 21 in Siloam Springs, Ark. The Stars (3-3) cut their deficit to 64-62 on Allison Frey's 3-pointer with 14 seconds left. OCU rallied from a 21-4 first-quarter hole to lead 40-37 late in the third quarter.
Daniela Wallen, a 5-foot-11 junior from Caracas, Venezuela, spearheaded the Stars with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. She hit 8 of her 16 shots from the field. Wallen became SAC player of the week for Nov. 16-22 after that performance. She provides OCU with 20.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.20 steals a game while shooting 56.6 percent from the floor.
Frey, a 5-9 sophomore from Mustang, Okla., recorded 18 points and four treys. Frey picks up 13.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting 44.4 percent from 3-point range. Amanda Ingram, a 5-9 junior from Oklahoma City, had 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals. Ingram averages 3.8 points and 3.5 rebounds a contest.
OCU ranks 10th with 30.8 defensive rebounds a game led by Wallen's 7.6 defensive rebounds average, which ranks fourth among the NAIA. To see how OCU matches up with the NAIA Division I statistical leaders this season, click here.
OCU took the seventh spot in the preseason NAIA Division I rankings. OCU continued streaks of being ranked in the top 10 in every poll since March 11, 2009 and making the top 25 for the 192nd consecutive time since 1999-2000. Oklahoma City owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014 and 2015. The Stars were expected to finish second in the preseason SAC poll. OCU has won or shared the regular-season league title 16 times, including the last six.
The Stars ripped Southwestern Christian 100-70 on Feb. 7 at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU has a 5-0 all-time record against Southwestern Christian.

ABOUT THE LADY EAGLES: Southwestern Christian topped St. Gregory's 59-44 on Thursday in Shawnee, Okla. Southwestern Christian (4-4, 1-0 SAC) limited St. Gregory's to 29.3 percent shooting from the floor.
Andi McGill, a 5-6 sophomore, led four Lady Eagles in double-digit scoring with 14 points to go with five rebounds. McGill paces Southwestern Christian in scoring (13.8 points), assists (3.1) and steals (1.50) per game. Eliora Johnson, a 5-11 sophomore, had 13 points and 16 rebounds. Johnson averages 12.6 points and 9.6 rebounds a game. Johnson was player of the week in National Christian College Athletic Association Division I and the SAC for Nov. 22-29.
Southwestern Christian's 70.9 percent free-throw percentage ranks 24th in NAIA Division I. SAC coaches placed Southwestern Christian at seventh in the preseason conference poll.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Bo Overton is in his debut season with OCU. Overton has a wide array of coaching experience, establishing a reputation as a top talent evaluator and recruiter. He has head-coaching experience on the professional level in China, Russia and the WNBA, as well as college head-coaching experience with Missouri-Kansas City. Overton has been an assistant on the international level for the Bahamas and China, including the 2012 Olympics with the Chinese team. Overton is well known among Oklahomans for his stint as an assistant to Sherri Coale at Oklahoma from 1998-2004 as well as playing college basketball at Oklahoma under Dave Bliss, who is currently the Southwestern Christian men's coach.
Mark Arthur added women's basketball coach to his duties as Southwestern Christian athletic director and men's golf coach in August. Arthur amassed a 404-329 record with four NCCAA championships and four ACCA championships as Southwestern Christian men's basketball coach from 1992-2012. The court at Pickens-Springer Gymnasium is named after Arthur, also a Southwestern Christian hall of famer.
