OCU bashes Williams Baptist 43-9

Stars cruise past Williams Baptist in duals.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pummeled Williams Baptist (Ark.) 43-9 on Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
OCU, ranked second in NAIA wrestling, recorded five falls, two technical falls and a decision en route to improving to 4-0 in duals. Jamie Shawver propelled OCU's victory with a fall in the opening match.
Shawver, a senior from Del City, Okla., pinned Conner Linehan in 3:10 in the 174-pound match to give the Stars an early 6-0 lead. Derek Sivertsen, a junior from Moore, Okla., knocked off Tyler Dibert in a 12-5 decision in the 184-pound match to stretch the lead to 9-0.
Josh Chiles of Williams Baptist edged Cody Sivertsen, a senior from Moore, Okla., in a 5-2 decision at 197 pounds to cut the Stars' lead to 9-3.
The Stars went on to record four consecutive falls to balloon the lead to 33-3. At 285, Korey Walker, a freshman from Midwest City, Okla., pinned Roger Moe in 2:52. Alvie Killingsworth, a senior from Vian, Okla., defeated Jay Branch in 4:07 in the 125-pound match.
Matt Landgraff, a freshman from Weeki Wachee, Fla., finished off Josh Averett in just 32 seconds in the 133-pound match, while James Landoll, a junior from Marysville, Kan., pinned Bryson Laytart in 5:30 at 141 pounds.
At 149, Patrick Grigsby of Williams Baptist pinned Eric Ambriz, a junior from Lake Elsinore, Calif., in 6:08 to put the score at 33-9.
Top ranked Zach Skates at 157 and Ricky McCarty at 165 finished the dual out with technical falls over Nick Hooper and Ryan Whittle, respectively.
"Our lower weights, 125, 133 and 141, came through real big this time," said OCU head coach Archie Randall. "In a dual when you start getting on a roll and you start wrestling really hard, it pays off and that's what they did. The two matches that we lost, we had opportunities to win but I thought we wrestled really well against a quality team. Big win for Korey Walker too, that's a quality opponent."
The Stars are back in action against Great Falls (Mont.) in the Great Falls Battle of the Rockies Duals at 4 p.m. Friday in Great Falls, Mont.
