Four Stars collect Newman Jet Invite titles

Nine Stars place at Newman Jet Invitational

WICHITA, Kan. - Ricky McCarty of Oklahoma City University nabbed his fifth tournament title in as many tries this season Sunday in the Newman Jet Invitational at the Fugate Gymnasium.
Oklahoma City's Zack Skates earned his fourth tournament title of the season, while Derek Sivertsen and Cody Sivertsen captured their first tournament titles of the season. Nine individuals placed Sunday for OCU, ranked fifth in NAIA wrestling.
Top-ranked McCarty and Skates took the 165-pound and 157-pound titles, respectively. McCarty, a junior from Lawton, Okla., beat Dawaylon Barnes of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 15-2 in an overtime match, while Skates, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., edged Jeromy Davenport of Central Oklahoma in a 3-2 decision. Barnes is ranked fourth in NJCAA wrestling at the 165-pound class.
Derek Sivertsen, a junior from Moore, Okla., won the 184-pound crown with a 4-3 decision over Jon Inman of Fort Hays State (Kan.). Sivertsen, ranked seventh nationally, won the outstanding wrestler award for the tournament.
Cody Sivertsen, a senior from Moore, Okla., outlasted Josh Latham of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in a 3-1 decision to earn the 197-pound title.
OCU's Parker Bohannan, James Landoll, Travon Smith, and Korey Walker finished runner-up in their respected weight classes.
Bohannan, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., lost a 14-3 major decision to Curtis Burnett of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Bohannan is ranked fifth in the 133-pound division.
Landoll, a junior from Marysville, Kan., fell in a 14-5 major decision to Joshua Ailey of Central Oklahoma. Landoll is ranked 15th nationally in the 141-pound division.
At 149, Smith, a senior from Shreveport, La., lost in a technical fall 15-0 to Spencer Rutherford of Central Oklahoma, while Walker was edged 3-1 in an overtime match against Blake Andrews, of Southeastern Oklahoma A&M. Walker is ranked 12th in the 285-pound division, while Andrews is ranked second in the NJCAA rankings.
Evan Hudson, a freshman from Oklahoma City, lost a 10-7 decision to Dylan Wiesner of Fort Hays State in the 174-pound third-place match. Hudson finished in fourth place.
The Stars are back in action on Dec. 21 at the Wartburg Desert Duals in Las Vegas.
