Stars' McCarty, Skates become Swede Open champs

Skates tops Simmons in clash of No. 1 vs. No. 2 among NAIA 157-pounders

LINDSBORG, Kan. – Ricky McCarty and Zach Skates of Oklahoma City University earned Bethany Swede Open titles Saturday at Smoky Valley High School.
Those two highlighted nine individuals who placed in the tournament for the Stars, ranked second in NAIA wrestling.
Runners-up for OCU were Evan Hudson at 184 pounds, Cody Sivertsen at 197 and Korey Walker at 285. Stars who took third were Jamie Shawver at 174 and Miguel Tovar at 197, while Matt Landgraff in the 133-pound weight class and Bryson McGowan at 285 picked up fourth.
In a matchup of the top two 157-pounders in the NAIA rankings, Skates prevailed 6-5 over Andrew Simmons of Missouri Valley for the tournament championship. Skates, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., knocked off Forlanda Parker of Newman (Kan.) in a technical fall 21-6 before taking a forfeit in the semifinals.
McCarty blanked Missouri Valley's Dalton Tipton 18-0 to win the 165-pound title. McCarty, a junior from Lawton, Okla., defeated Derrick Gates from Fort Hays State (Kan.) 9-5 in the semifinals and Zach Due of Newman (Kan.) 18-1 in the quarters.
OCU takes on Lyon (Ark.) and Northeastern A&M in duals starting 4 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
