EDMOND, Okla. – Oklahoma City University rallied past Oklahoma Christian 83-70 on Saturday at Hamilton Field House in the Central Oklahoma Thanksgiving Classic.
Lou Dunbar ignited Oklahoma City with 23 points and seven 3-pointers. The Stars moved to 2-1 in men's basketball.
Dunbar, a sophomore from Seabrook, Texas, nailed 7 of 11 treys as Oklahoma City downed 13 of 20 from 3-point range. Evan White, a senior from San Antonio, sank 4 of 5 from 3-point territory to contribute 12 points.
The Stars erased a 13-point first-half deficit. In the second half, OCU shot 63.6 percent from the field (14-for-22) while holding its Backyard Brawl rival Oklahoma Christian to a 35.3 percent field-goal percentage (6-for-17).
"I'm really proud of our defensive effort in the second half," Oklahoma City coach Vinay Patel said. "I thought that is what sparked us on offense and got us going. We did a great job of sharing the basketball tonight, and hopefully we can build from this win."
Seven-footer John Moore led Oklahoma Christian with 20 points and nine rebounds while hitting 9 of 13 from the floor. Andrew Akaji chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds in his first start for the Stars, while 6-8 Alex James also matched up with Moore.
"Oklahoma Christian is a very well-coached team, and John Moon was a tough matchup for us all night inside," Patel said. "Our team stepped up and made some plays at key moments in the game. I'm very proud of the way Andrew and Alex battled inside tonight."
Deric Shelton nailed a trey for a 42-29 Oklahoma Christian advantage with 2:15 left in the first period. The Stars cut their deficit to single digits as Jamil Donovan hit a 3 for a 46-38 halftime hole for OCU.
Dunbar hit three treys in a row to open the second half. Dunbar and White combined for eight 3s in the first 8:18 of the second period to put OCU in front 62-55. Dunbar nailed back-to-back-to-back triples, including the go-ahead 3-pointer for a 56-54 Stars edge at the 14:02 mark.
