OCU takes down Our Lady of the Lake 92-79

Patel posts first regular-season win as Stars boss

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University walloped Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) 92-79 on Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Noel Allen and Lou Dunbar led the Stars with 18 points each. OCU earned its first regular-season win of the season against Our Lady of the Lake, ranked 25th in NAIA Division I men's basketball.
Allen, a senior from Guttenberg, N.J., added five rebounds while hitting 8 of his 13 shots from the field. Dunbar, a sophomore from Seabrook, Texas, sank 7 of 8 free throws for OCU.
Five Stars hit double digits in scoring. Jordan Mason, a junior from Ennis, Texas, tallied 13 points, while Dorion Gigger, a junior from Oklahoma City, provided OCU with 12 points, seven rebounds and two assists while shooting 4-for-4 from the floor. Jamil Donovan, a senior from Oklahoma City, notched 10 points, eight assists and three steals for the Stars.
Oklahoma City recorded a 52.5 percent field-goal percentage, hitting 55.2 percent in the second half. The Stars limited Our Lady of the Lake to 42.4 percent shooting overall and 33.3 percent in the first period. OCU had a 48-27 rebounding advantage.
"We thought our interior players were going to be a big key in this game," said OCU coach Vinay Patel, who picked up his first win with the Stars. "They're a very good team. They're tough to play against with the way they play. We felt we did have a little bit of a size advantage with Noel and a couple of our other interior guys. Our big question was whether those guys were going to be able to defend their guards. I thought Noel, Dorion Gigger, Alex James and Andrew Akaji were put into a position they're not accustomed to, and they did a great job."
Allen scored eight of his points as Oklahoma City built a 22-10 lead with 12 minutes to go in the first half. Allen's transition dunk off Jonathan Reed's assist put the Stars up 12 points.
Our Lady of the Lake chipped away at the Stars' lead. Christian Wood-Dvorak gave the Saints a 66-65 edge on a 3-pointer at the 8:53 mark of the second half. After Joe Jackson's basket put the visitors in front 68-67, Andrew Akaji answered with free throws with 7:53 showing to give OCU the lead for good.
OCU reeled off a 12-2 run to push its lead to 86-73 with 2:10 remaining. Dunbar sparked the Stars with a layup and 3-pointer followed by Terence Bonhomme's trey. Donovan dropped in four free throws to cap the surge.
"I can't compliment this team enough on their effort," Patel said. "I'm very proud. This team has been fun to coach. They play very hard. You saw loose balls we were diving for. We were putting our bodies on the line and taking charges. Those are things we discussed before the game."
The Stars take on Central Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Central Oklahoma Classic at Edmond, Okla.
