Skates captures 11th career tournament championship

BRISTOL, Tenn. - Ricky McCarty and Zach Skates from Oklahoma City University took King Open titles for their third tournament title in as many tries this season Sunday at the King student center.
Cody Sivertsen picked up a tournament title as he has placed in all three 2015-16 tournaments he's competed in for the Stars. Eleven individuals placed Sunday for OCU, ranked fourth in NAIA wrestling.
Runners-up for OCU were Matt Landgraff at 133 pounds, James Landoll at 141 and Miguel Tovar at 197. Placing third were Evan Hudson at 174 and Derek Sivertsen at 184, while Eric Ambriz (149), Alvie Killingsworth (125) and Bryson McGowan (284) took fourth.
Skates repeated as King Open 157-pound champion for his 11th career tournament title with the Stars. Skates, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., secured the championship with a 7-3 win over Justus Weaver. Skates, ranked No. 1 among NAIA 157-pounders, went 3-0 with a fall and technical-fall win Sunday.
McCarty overwhelmed the competition with three wins by technical fall. McCarty, a junior from Lawton, Okla., rolled to a 17-0 win over Mike Binns in the title bout. McCarty holds the No. 1 ranking in the NAIA at 165.
Cody Sivertsen edged Tovar 4-3 in the second tiebreaker period to earn the 197-pound title. Sivertsen, a senior from Moore, Okla., pinned his first opponent of the day. Sivertsen stands 16th in the NAIA's 197-pound ratings.
Oklahoma City faces Williams Baptist (Ark.) in an 8 p.m. dual Dec. 2 at Abe Lemons Arena.
