Stars clash with ranked teams this weekend

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University travels to the LSU-Shreveport Classic to play LSU-Shreveport, ranked 25th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, and Our Lady of the Lake (Texas). OCU and OLLU share the No. 7 spot in the NAIA rankings.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU (0-1) lost its season opener 85-48 against 18th-ranked Langston on Nov. 7 in Langston, Okla.
Catherine Kruschke, a senior from Dublin, Calif., led the Stars with a career-high 19 points while adding seven rebounds. The 6-foot center shot 33 percent from the field and was 4-for-6 from the foul line. She averaged 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds in 32 games played last season.
Allison Frey, a guard from Mustang, Okla., scored 12 points, all from beyond the arc. The 5-9 sophomore shot 40 percent from the 3-point line and collected a team-high eight rebounds. Amanda Ingram led OCU with four assists and two blocks, while adding six boards, five points and a steal.
Oklahoma City holds the seventh spot in the preseason NAIA rankings. The two-time defending NAIA Division I women's basketball national champion Stars are slotted to finish second in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Oklahoma City has won the last six SAC regular-season championships and captured its 10th SAC Tournament championship last season.
OCU has gone 2-0 against Our Lady of the Lake. Last season, the Stars took a 108-83 victory over Our Lady of the Lake on Nov. 21, 2014 in Oklahoma City.
The Stars face LSU-Shreveport for the first time ever.
 
ABOUT THE PILOTS: LSU-Shreveport dropped its season opener at home 56-46 against Texas Wesleyan on Nov. 3. Texas Wesleyan forced 24 turnovers and held the Pilots to a 30.6 percent field-goal percentage. The Pilots shot just 15.8 percent from beyond the arc, and were 5-for-14 from the charity stripe.
Kourtney Pennywell led the Pilots with 13 points and 14 rebounds. The 5-10 forward was a 2014-15 NAIA all-American recipient and an NAIA player of the year finalist. She led the NAIA in double-doubles last season, while averaging 11.8 rebounds and 22.5 points per game. Alexandra Miller, a 5-8 guard, added 10 points, two assists and two steals. The reigning Red River Athletic Conference freshman of the year led the Pilots with 54 3-pointers, while averaging 8.6 points and 3.4 rebounds a game in 2014-15.
LSU Shreveport was picked to finish fourth in the Red River Athletic Conference.
 
ABOUT THE SAINTS: Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) began the season with a close defeat against NCAA Division I Prairie View A&M 92-91 in an exhibition game on Nov. 8 in Prairie View, Texas. The Saints had a total of 20 turnovers and 24 fouls.
Sonji Green, a 6-foot senior, made 9-of-13 for 20 points and tallied 10 boards. Green led the Saints in rebounds per game (6.9) and was second on the team in points per game (12.3) in the 2014-15 campaign. She was named to the all-conference first team for the 2014-15 season. Nakia Page went 8-for-22 for 19 points. Sandmann averaged 7.4 points and 2.8 rebounds in 20 games played last season for the Saints.
The Saints' first regular-season game will be vs. No. 21-ranked Xavier (La.) on Saturday in the LSU Shreveport Classic. Our Lady of the Lake won the RRAC regular-season title last year and is the favorite to finish first again this season.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Bo Overton is in his debut season with OCU. Prior to being with the Stars, Overton has had international professional stints in China, Russia, and with the Bahaman national team. In 2007 he served as the head coach for the WNBA's Chicago Sky. Overton has college experience as a head coach of Missouri-Kansas City and was the assistant coach under Sherri Coale at Oklahoma University from 1998-2004.
Valerie Huizar enters her second year as the LSUS head coach. Last year, Huizar led the Pilots to the program's fifth appearance in the NAIA Tournament. The Pilots lost in the first round to Campbellsville (Ky.), the eventual NAIA runner-up. Before LSUS, Huizar spent two years as an assistant coach at conference rival OLLU.
Christopher Minner has been with OLLU for seven years but he enters his fourth year as the Saints head coach. Minner guided the Saints to a regular-season RRAC championship with an 18-2 conference record last year. OLLU lost in the conference tournament to Langston but received a bid to go to the NAIA Tournament for the fourth straight year.
