Three OCU wrestlers snare Oklahoma City Open crowns

Seven Stars place in tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY – Zach Skates from Oklahoma City University captured his third Oklahoma City Open 157-pound championship Sunday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Ricky McCarty reeled in the 165-pound title in the open division, while Korey Walker won the 285-pound crown in the freshman-sophomore division for the Stars, ranked second in NAIA wrestling.
Also in the open division, Cody Sivertsen of OCU knocked off teammate Miguel Tovar in the 197-pound third-place match. OCU's Derek Sivertsen took fourth at 184, while James Landoll picked up fourth at 141.
Skates, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., edged Dawaylon Barnes from Northeastern A&M 8-7 for the 157-pound title. Skates, ranked No. 1 among NAIA 157-pounders, defeated Oklahoma State's Ryan Blees 5-3 in the semifinals. Skates also had an 18-2 technical-fall win over Landon Reed of King (Tenn.). Skates had finished as 157-pound runner-up last season after winning the 165-pound crowns as a redshirt freshman and sophomore. In 2011-12, Skates became the 157-pound runner-up while competing unattached for Oklahoma State.
McCarty, a junior from Lawton, Okla., posted a 9-2 win over NEO's Chase Nelson to nab the 165-pound championship. McCarty, the top-ranked defending NAIA 165-pound champion, reached the title match with a pair of major-decision victories. In the OCU Open, McCarty was the champion as a sophomore and the runner-up as a freshman among 165-pounders in the freshman-sophomore division.
Walker, a freshman from Midwest City, Okla., won 5-3 over Garrett Beier from Oklahoma State in the 285-pound championship match in the freshman-sophomore division. Walker pinned DeAndre Chavarria in 3:23 in the first round, then nipped Central Oklahoma's Kyle Factor 3-2 in the semifinals.
Oklahoma City competes in its first dual of the season against Missouri Baptist at 4 p.m., then against 19th-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
