Wayland Baptist edges OCU

Stars trail Wayland Baptist by half game in SAC standings

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Wayland Baptist (Texas) snapped Oklahoma City University's five-contest win streak 18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11 on Saturday at the Hutcherson Center.
Heather Watson, a senior from Edmond, Okla., dished out a career-best 61 assists to go with six digs for the Stars. Oklahoma City, ranked 24th in NAIA volleyball, went to 16-6, 11-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU saw its conference win streak end at 11. Wayland Baptist (23-6, 12-1 SAC) holds a half-game lead in the SAC standings. Wayland has three league matches remaining, while OCU plays four more SAC contests.
The conference regular-season champion will have homecourt advantage throughout the SAC Tournament on Nov. 7, 11 and 14 to be played on campus sites with the higher seed hosting.
The Stars' Dani Chase, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., corraled a season-high 29 digs, while Tori Leisure pounded a career-high 18 kills to go with two blocks. Leisure, a senior from Haslet, Texas, topped her previous high of 17 kills against Mid-America Christian on Oct. 30, 2012.
Manon Soraru, a sophomore from Mulhouse, France, produced a season-best 17 kills plus two blocks, and Jami-Rae Renwick, a senior from Emerald Park, Saskatchewan, Canada, provided the Stars 12 kills. Fia Faa'agi, a freshman from Murrieta, Calif., contributed 10 kills and six digs, while Stefani Nell, a sophomore from Tulsa, Okla., added eight kills and 14 digs for OCU. Shekinah Clarke, a freshman from Waianae, Hawaii, scooped 12 digs.
In the fifth set, Faa'agi smashed a kill that cut the Stars' deficit to 9-8. Shahala Hawkins responded with a pair of kills for Wayland Baptist. Chelsey Driskill's kills put Wayland Baptist ahead 14-10.    
The Stars face Texas Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 in Fort Worth, Texas.
