OCU suffers setback to Texas Wesleyan

Soraru supplies Stars 17 kills

FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas Wesleyan dealt Oklahoma City University a 22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 loss Friday at the Sid Richardson Center.
OCU (16-7, 11-2 Sooner Athletic Conference) suffered its second consecutive setback in conference volleyball action. Manon Soraru, a sophomore from Mulhouse, France, pounded a team-high 17 kills while picking up four blocks for the Stars.
Tori Leisure, a senior from Haslet, Texas, provided OCU with nine kills and a career-high nine blocks, while Fia Faa'agi, a freshman from Murrieta, Calif., accumulated nine kills, nine digs and six blocks. Heather Watson, a senior from Edmond, Okla., notched 27 assists and four digs, and Hannah Mitcham, a senior from Fort Worth, Texas, posted 17 assists and three digs for the Stars.
Dani Chase, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., tracked down 18 digs to go with two aces, and Shekinah Clarke, a freshman from Waianae, Hawaii, put together seven kills and 13 digs for OCU.
In the first set, the Stars erased a 12-8 deficit. OCU reeled off six consecutive points to go up 20-18. Faa'agi knocked down two kills during the 6-0 run, while Soraru's ace gave the Stars the lead 19-18. Jami-Rae Renwick helped OCU put away the set by nailing a kill, then teaming with Soraru on a block.
In an effort to force a fifth set, OCU built 9-4 and 13-8 fourth-set advantages. Abby Zipoy ignited a 7-0 Texas Wesleyan run with a kill, then put her team up 15-13 with an ace.
Soraru smacked a kill for a 22-21 Stars edge. Zipoy had kills to provide Texas Wesleyan with match point and the clinching point.
The Stars meet Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Waxahachie, Texas.
