OCU trims Mid-America Christian in five sets

Watson accumulates 58 assists for Stars

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rallied past Mid-America Christian 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-10 on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Heather Watson dished out a career-high 58 assists to pace OCU. The Stars, ranked 23rd in NAIA volleyball, upped its record to 15-5, 10-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Watson, a senior from Edmond, Okla., posted her second 50-assist performance ever and the most assists by a Star since Danielle Robison's 61 on Oct. 19, 2010. Watson picked up 14 digs.
"It took five sets to do it," OCU coach Kyle Steele said. "When she plays confidently, the rest of the team tends to feed off of that. Her confidence the last three sets really pushed us along. We want her to be more of a leader on the court and to work on some of those intangible things, but she is hitting her numbers. If we're looking purely at the numbers, she is one of the best in the country, and we are so glad to have her on our team."
In the fifth set, Oklahoma City erased a 7-5 deficit with six consecutive points. Manon Soraru smacked three kills during that Stars run, breaking a 7-7 tie with a pair of kills. Soraru's kill put OCU up 11-7.
OCU's Fia Faa'agi finished the match by hammering two kills.
In the fourth set, the Stars overcame a 13-9 hole. OCU went on a 7-1 run to leave behind a 15-12 deficit. Faa'agi had five kills, while Stefani Nell added two kills in that span. Soraru clinched the fourth set with two kills and an ace.
"It took us digging a little deeper than we wanted to have to dig tonight," Steele said. "We got to a place where we decided it wasn't going to be like this anymore. It shows us that we have heart. We have been tested, but never on this level where we were unsure of ourselves. It showed that we're a little more mentally tough than we think we are."
Soraru, a sophomore from Mulhouse, France, piled up 16 kills, four digs, three blocks and two aces, while Faa'agi, a freshman from Murrieta, Calif., amassed 15 kills, four digs and four aces for the Stars. OCU's Tori Leisure, a senior from Haslet, Texas, knocked down 15 kills.
Dani Chase, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., provided OCU with 24 digs, and Shekinah Clarke, a freshman from Waianae, Hawaii, scooped 16 digs.
The Stars face Southwestern Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
