Stars nip John Brown in five sets

OCU improves to 1-1 in five-set matches this season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University nudged past John Brown (Ark.) 25-14, 25-18, 19-25, 18-25, 15-8 on Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Tori Leisure and Jami-Rae Renwick spearheaded the Stars with 16 kills each. OCU, ranked 23rd in NAIA volleyball, remained unbeaten within league play at 14-5, 9-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
In the fifth set, Heather Watson served up an ace to give the Stars a 3-0 lead. Leisure nailed a pair of kills to extend OCU's lead to 5-2. Manon Soraru had a kill and a block to put the Stars ahead 7-3.
Oklahoma City reeled off a 6-0 run as Soraru's ace gave the Stars match point at 14-5. Soraru sparked the splurge with a kill, then Shekinah Clarke added two kills. Leisure knocked down a kill to finish the match.
Leisure, a senior from Haslet, Texas, and Soraru, a sophomore from Mulhouse, France, pitched in three kills each during the final set. Overall, Leisure recorded three blocks, while Soraru contributed 15 kills, eight digs and four blocks for the Stars.
OCU's Fia Faa'agi, a freshman from Murrieta, Calif., posted 10 kills, six digs and two blocks, and Watson, a senior from Edmond, Okla., amassed 43 assists and seven digs. Stefani Nell, a sophomore from Tulsa, Okla., provided the Stars with seven kills, 16 digs and two blocks, and Dani Chase, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., picked up 22 digs, seven assists and two aces.
The Stars played in their second five-set contest of the season. OCU's first such match became a loss to then-12th-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) on Sept. 12 in Baldwin City, Kan.  
Oklahoma City takes on Mid-America Christian at 7 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
