OCU vs. Texas Wesleyan men's basketball preview

Series includes 2006 national championship game won by Texas Wesleyan

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University will look to repay Sooner Athletic Conference foe Texas Wesleyan for a loss earlier this season.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, while OCU students, faculty and staff are allowed into all regular-season OCU athletics events for free with their ID. If the Stars score 70 points, fans will get a prize from Raising Cane's. For the OCU athletics visitors guide, click here.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars knocked off John Brown (Ark.) 85-71 on Thursday in Siloam Springs, Ark. OCU (9-6, 5-4 SAC play) secured its second consecutive victory by a double-digit margin.
Tharone Chilton, a 6-foot-2 senior from Tulsa, Okla., posted 21 points, three rebounds, three assists and five steals. Chilton compiles 16.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.73 steals a contest.
Gary Inglett, a 6-6 senior from Ardmore, Okla., accumulated 21 points and eight rebounds. Inglett leads the conference in rebounding and double-doubles (seven). Inglett provides the Stars with 18.4 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists a game. Dorion Gigger, a 6-5 sophomore from Moore, Okla., and R.J. McGhee, a 6-6 senior from Baton Rouge, La., each had 11 points Thursday. McGhee, who contributed four rebounds, five assists and four steals, averages a team-high 19.1 points per game.

OCU has been projected to finish fourth in the SAC by league coaches. Oklahoma City owns six NAIA national championships won in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
The all-time series is tied 9-9. Texas Wesleyan edged OCU 92-90 on Dec. 4, 2014 in Fort Worth, Texas in the first of this season's home-and-home series. Sam Akano hit a 3-pointer, then the Rams added five free throws in the final minute to rally for the win.
 
ABOUT THE RAMS: Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) pulled out the 77-69 win over Texas Wesleyan on Thursday, Jan. 29 in Waxahachie, Texas. The game was tied 63-63 with 4:23 left in the game, but SAGU's Tyler Guidry and Rishaad Alexander downed treys to help sink Texas Wesleyan (14-6, 3-6 SAC).
Merv Lindsay, a 6-7 junior, produced 24 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Lindsay records 14.3 points and 6.5 rebounds a game. Jerrell Ellis, a 6-4 junior, had 16 points, five rebounds and two steals. Ellis averages 19.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.40 steals per game.
Texas Wesleyan ranks 11th nationally in team rebounding at 41.9 per game. The Rams had been picked to finish seventh in the league in the preseason.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps owns a 54-44 record in his fourth season as OCU coach. He led the Stars to the SAC Tournament title and an NAIA Division I Tournament appearance in 2012-13. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of five conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 24-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Brennan Shingleton has led Texas Wesleyan to a 49-34 record in his third season as head coach. Shingleton spent 10 years as a Texas Wesleyan assistant before ascending to the top job. He has guided Texas Wesleyan to an 11-18 record all-time in the SAC since joining the league.
