OCU sinks Southwestern Assemblies of God 65-62

Stars erase 10-point deficit in stopping three-game skid

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pulled off a 65-62 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Tharone Chilton, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., keyed the Stars with 24 points. Oklahoma City improved to 7-6, 3-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball and left behind a three-game losing streak.
Chilton added six rebounds, three assists and two steals. OCU's Gary Inglett came through with 21 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. Inglett, a senior from Ardmore, Okla., notched his third consecutive double-double and fifth of the season.
"Those two have been very consistent for us," Phelps said of Chilton and Inglett. "Tharon was doing exactly what he needs to be doing for us, and Gary has been really consistent."
R.J. McGhee, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., chipped in nine points, six rebounds and three steals, while Ivan Jelencic, a senior from Sibenik, Croatia, contributed eight points and seven rebounds for the Stars.
Dorion Gigger recorded three blocked shots as OCU had a season-high seven rejections. The Stars held Southwestern Assemblies of God to 38.5 percent shooting from the field and 35.3 percent shooting in the second half.
"I felt like our guys are still trying to compete," Phelps said. "It's been a couple of days since we've had our full roster. It helped us down the stretch defensively."
Oklahoma City used an 8-0 burst to grab the lead 53-50 with 6:13 left in the game. Inglett scored on a layup, then a putback plus a free throw to put the Stars in front 52-50 at the 7:24 mark. Chilton added three free throws to OCU's run.
Southwestern Assemblies took back the lead 54-53 with Jason Gentry's transition bucket with 5:13 remaining. Oklahoma City responded by scoring the game's next 10 points. Chilton had a fastbreak layup and a lay-in off McGhee's assist to put the Stars on top 57-54 with 3:41 to go.
Inglett scored on a breakaway, then added three free throws. Inglett's pair of points from the free-throw line with 51.3 seconds showing gave OCU a 63-54 advantage.
Rishaad Alexander cut OCU's lead to 64-59 on free throws with seven seconds left, but Chilton had a free throw for a 65-59 cushion with five seconds to go. Alexander beat the buzzer by hitting a trey for the final margin.
The Stars overcame a 21-11 deficit in the first half.
"That first half was very tough," Phelps said. "We were able to stay in the game only down three with the way they were shooting. Hat's off to our defense. I'm really proud of our guys doing that and not giving up.
"It was a good win. I'm very excited about this win."
OCU faces St. Gregory's at 5 p.m. Saturday in Shawnee, Okla.
