OCU vs. Southwestern Assemblies of God men's basketball preview

Last season's games between two teams were decided by combined eight points

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University aims to return to its winning ways in a home matchup with Sooner Athletic Conference foe Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas).

ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City fell to seventh-ranked Oklahoma Baptist 78-74 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU (6-6, 2-4 SAC) went to 1-1 against top-25 competition this season.
Gary Inglett, a 6-foot-6 senior from Ardmore, Okla., propelled the Stars with 28 points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Inglett shot 10-for-14 from the field and 8-for-8 on free throws. Inglett posts 18.2 points and 10.1 rebounds a game while ranking ninth in rebounding in the NAIA.
Evan White, a 6-4 junior from San Antonio, produced 14 points while hitting both of OCU's 3-pointers on the day. White scored in double digits for the second time this season. He contributes 6.2 points and 1.5 rebounds a game. Jamil Donovan, a 5-7 junior from Oklahoma City, had 12 points and five assists. Donovan averages 6.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists a game.
Oklahoma City ranks 14th nationally in field-goal percentage (47.6), assists per game (16.6) and free-throw percentage (71.7). To see how the Stars rate statistically among NAIA Division I, click here.
The Stars have been predicted to take fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference in the preseason. OCU has won six national championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
Southwestern Assemblies of God swept the season series from OCU last season in the first two contests between the teams. Southwestern Assemblies edged the Stars 68-63 on Jan. 30, 2014 at Abe Lemons Arena.
 
ABOUT THE LIONS: Southwestern Assemblies of God blasted Dallas Christian 95-76 on Monday in Waxahachie, Texas. Southwestern Assemblies (12-5, 3-3 SAC) committed 30 turnovers, but held Dallas Christian to 39.3 percent shooting from the floor.
Jason Gentry, a 6-2 junior, sparked his team with 14 points and five assists. Gentry tallies 10.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Andrew Erskine, a 6-5 junior, had 13 points and four 3-pointers. Erskine averages 4.9 points and 2.8 rebounds a game. Jonathan Walter, a 6-4 senior, leads Southwestern Assemblies with 14.7 points a game.
Southwestern Assemblies of God received votes in the last set of national rankings. The Lions lead the NAIA with 14.78 steals a contest. SAGU had been pegged as the fifth-best team in the SAC in the preseason.    
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps owns a record of 51-44 in his fourth season as OCU coach. He led the Stars to the SAC Tournament title and an NAIA Division I Tournament appearance in 2012-13. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 24-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Donnie Bostwick has a 98-27 record in his fourth season with Southwestern Assemblies of God. Bostwick led the Lions to the 2013 NAIA Division I Tournament title game. He also won the 2009 NAIA Division II championship with Oklahoma Wesleyan, where he went 120-20 in four seasons.
