Stars suffer 79-78 setback to Southwestern Christian

White's 3-pointer gives OCU edge with 13 seconds left

BETHANY, Okla. – Vladimir Nemcok provided Southwestern Christian the eventual game-winning jumper with six seconds left in a 79-78 win over Oklahoma City University on Thursday at Pickens-Springer Gymnasium.
Evan White put Oklahoma City in front 78-77 with a 3-pointer from the right wing with 13.4 seconds showing. The Stars went to 6-4, 2-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.
OCU rallied from a 19-point deficit while almost pulling off the victory. White hit a jumper in the paint to chop Southwestern Christian's lead to 76-75 with 56 seconds to go. Austin Turner answered with a free throw for the Eagles with 31 seconds on the clock.
White bounced a 3-point shot off the front of the rim as the buzzer sounded for the final verdict.
"Every game in this league is a challenge," OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. "We have to come prepared."
Tharone Chilton, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., supplied OCU with season highs of 30 points and eight rebounds. Gary Inglett, a senior from Ardmore, Okla., snagged his third double-double of the season for the Stars with 22 points and 15 rebounds.
Ivan Jelencic, a senior from Sibenik, Croatia, sparked OCU with its first seven points of the game and finished with nine points. White added seven points, while Dorion Gigger, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, chipped in six points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots for the Stars.
White scooped up the ball after Gigger's rejection, then scored on a fastbreak basket for a 14-11 OCU edge with 15:15 to go in the first period. Southwestern Christian answered with a 13-0 run to create a 32-18 advantage at the 5:14 mark.
"We found ourselves in a hole and tried to dig ourselves out," Phelps said.
The Stars chipped away at their deficit in the second half. OCU posted a 7-0 run to trail 68-65 with 5:11 left. Inglett had a 3-point play and a jumper, then Chilton added a jump shot in the paint.
Inglett added free throws to slice Southwestern Christian's lead to 75-71 at the 2:34 mark. Gigger's foul shots cut Oklahoma City's deficit to 76-73 with 1:17 to go.
