OCU edges Mid-America Christian

Stars escape with third league win of 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pulled off a 24-26, 25-19, 28-30, 25-16, 15-7 victory over Mid-America Christian on Thursday evening at Abe Lemons Arena.
Rachel Gabel established a new career high with 23 kills for Oklahoma City. The Stars improved to 10-4, 3-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball.
Gabel, a junior from Richardson, Texas, accumulated 21 digs and two blocks. Gabel reached 20 kills and 20 digs in the same match for the first time in her OCU career. She notched her third 20-kill performance and fourth 20-dig single-contest total as a Star.
OCU closed out the win by scoring the match's final four points. Meghan Irwin hammered two kills and shared a block with Jami-Rae Renwick for the Stars. Heather Watson's dump-off kill gave OCU a 6-2 advantage in the fifth set.
Gabel's consecutive kills aided the Stars in creating a 20-13 lead in the fourth set.  
Irwin, a senior from Arlington, Texas, delivered 16 kills and five blocks, and Hannah Mitcham, a junior from Fort Worth, Texas, generated 47 assists and eight digs for Oklahoma City. Mitcham had her highest assist output since piling up 54 on Sept. 30, 2013 against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas).
Kelley Shiels, a senior from Edmond, Okla., supplied OCU with 22 digs to gather 20 digs for the fifth time this year. Holly Randall, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., pounded a season-high 11 kills to go with four blocks, and Lindsey Grace, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., picked up a season-high 16 digs for the Stars.
OCU faces Graceland (Iowa) at 5 p.m., then Baker (Kan.) at 7 p.m. Friday in the MidAmerica Nazarene Invitational at Olathe, Kan.
