Stars secure SAC title with 72-68 win over OBU

OCU captures 15th conference regular-season crown

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University collected the Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season women's basketball championship with a 72-68 victory over Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena in a battle of teams ranked in the top 10 of NAIA women's basketball.
OCU has won or shared 15 SAC titles and five consecutive league crowns in the regular season. The fifth-ranked Stars (21-3, 18-2 SAC) will have the top seed in the upcoming SAC Tournament.
Sixth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist (25-5, 17-3 SAC) will hold the No. 2 seed in the league tournament March 5-8 at OBU's Noble Complex in Shawnee, Okla. Pairings are to be announced.
Autumn Lau, a senior from Mount Wolf, Pa., spearheaded OCU with 25 points, five rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals. Kayla MacKenzie, a senior from Peoria, Ariz., picked up 15 points, eight rebounds and two assists for the Stars.
OCU's Yvonte Neal, a junior from Spring Valley, Calif., notched her first double-double of the season with 11 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals, while Autumn Huffman had 10 points and two blocks.
"Our seniors didn't want to leave today without a win," OCU coach Latricia Trammell said. "We played well on both the offensive and defensive ends."
Elisabeth Daniels produced 15 points, five rebounds and three assists, and Charity Fowler added 15 points and seven rebounds for Oklahoma Baptist.
Cara Pugh provided OCU with its largest lead of the contest 65-57 with a free throw with 4:49 to go. OBU roared back to take a 68-67 edge with 1:52 remaining on Fowler's free throws.
OCU answered as MacKenzie nailed a jumper off Neal's inbounds feed at 1:34 showing. MacKenzie added free throws for the final margin, the last coming with 25 seconds left.
Cameerah Graves put Oklahoma Baptist ahead 22-17 with free throws at the 5:29 mark of the first period. The Lady Bison limited the Stars to 26.5 percent shooting in the first.
OCU responded in the second half by hitting 58.6 percent of its shots from the field.
Jalissa Council went for 31 and hit 13 of 18 shots from the field in Oklahoma Baptist's 85-79 victory Jan. 16 in Shawnee, Okla. The Stars held Council to 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the floor Saturday.
The Stars won without making a 3-pointer for the first time since beating Central Methodist (Mo.) 74-39 on March 13, 2013 in Frankfort, Ky. OCU had made a trey in 25 consecutive games.
