Stars edge John Brown 86-76

OCU improves to 8-5 in SAC play

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Oklahoma City University upended John Brown (Ark.) 86-76 Saturday at Bill George Arena.
OCU, now 12-8 overall and 8-5 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, withstood a hot-shooting first half from the Golden Eagles and scored 32 points off 22 turnovers to pick up the victory.
The win is OCU's first in Bill George Arena and first in Siloam Springs since the 2007-08 season.
Five Stars scored in double figures including 26 points from R.J. McGhee. Kaleb Smith followed with 12 points. Terence Bonhomme, Jamaal Crayton and Terrence Walker added 10 points apiece.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead by making their first five attempts from 3-point range.
John Brown shot 52 percent from floor and 58 percent from 3-point distance and led by as many as 12 points in the first half.
The Stars closed the first frame on 10-4 run and cut the John Brown lead to 39-34 at the break. Crayton and Smith fueled the run with four points each.
The Stars scored 17 points off turnovers in the half and shot 44 percent from the floor.
Back-to-back buckets from McGhee and a jumper from Dema Sane cut the John Brown lead to 41-40 early in the second half, but John Brown responded and rebuilt its lead to 59-50 with 12:56 to go.
At the 12:40 mark, McGhee scored nine of the Stars' next 11 points and sparked OCU to an 18-3 run. Dorion Gigger capped the run with seven straight OCU points and gave the Stars a 68-62 lead with 6:45 to play in the game.
OCU converted 8-of-11 attempts from the charity stripe down the stretch and escaped with the 86-76 victory.
OCU shot 58 percent from the floor and 67 percent from 3-point land in the second half.
The Stars will return to action against Southwestern Christian at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
