Stars fall to Mid-America Christian 99-91

OCU now 12-7 in SAC play

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University suffered a 99-91 setback against Mid-America Christian Thursday at the Gaulke Activity Center.
The Stars, ranked No. 17 in NAIA Division I men's basketball, cut a 19-point deficit down to single digits in the final minutes but failed to climb all the way back and fell to the Evangels. The loss moved the Stars to 16-10 overall and 12-7 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
The Stars got a pair of 20-point performances from Terry Johnson and R.J. McGhee. McGhee paced the Stars with 25 points and eight rebounds, and Johnson followed with 22 points and seven boards. Terence Bonhomme provided 15 points off the bench while Terrence Walker chipped in with 10 points.
After a Kaleb Smith bucket made the score 15-15, Mid-America Christian embarked on a 27-10 run and took a 42-25 lead with two minutes and 30 seconds left in the first half.
Dorion Gigger scored off an Evangel turnover with five second left in the half and cut the Mid-America Christian lead to 44-31 at the break.
Three straight baskets from Smith and Bonhomme sparked OCU to a 20-7 run and cut the Evangels' lead to 69-63 with 7:39 remaining.
Mid-America Christian responded and built a 19-point lead at the 2:41 mark.
McGhee made three straight triples to spark a 16-3 OCU run and cut the Mid-America Christian lead to 92-86 with 50 seconds to go.
The Evangels made 7-of-10 from the free throw line down the stretch and held on to pick up the 99-91 victory.
OCU will return to action against Oklahoma Baptist at 5 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
