OCU tops St. Gregory’s 92-83

Stars move into tie for second place in SAC standings

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University outlasted St. Gregory's 92-83 Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, now 14-9 overall and 10-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, got 30 points from senior R.J. McGhee and shot 50 percent from the floor and from 3-point distance to dispatch the 23rd-ranked Cavaliers.
"It was a good game, and it was a good win," OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. "At this point of the year you just have to do everything you can to pull out a W."
Terrence Walker scored six early points in the paint to kick start the OCU offense in the first half.
McGhee buried a 3-pointer at the 16:15 mark of the first half and sparked a 9-1 Stars' run to give OCU a 17-8 advantage.
Back-to-back triples from McGhee and Jamaal Crayton gave OCU its largest lead of the first half at 39-26 with 2:34 to go.
McGhee closed the half with five straight points to give the Stars a 46-34 lead at the break.
OCU shot 50 percent from the field in the first period while holding the Cavaliers to just 39 percent from the floor and 28 percent from 3-point range.
Tilford Thornton hit a jumper at the 10:52 mark and led the Cavaliers on a 10-4 run to cut the OCU lead to 73-67.
Terry Johnson answered with five straight points to help the Stars rebuild their double-digit lead with 6:37 to go.
The Stars converted 8-of-9 attempts from the free throw line down the stretch to hold off the Cavaliers and take the 92-83 victory.
McGhee grabbed nine rebounds and hit five triples en route to a game-high 30 points.
"R.J. played well offensively and defensively," Phelps said. "He came in and watched film and he was really locked in for this particular game. He's a tough kid, he's maturing and moving in the right direction to be the kind of player we need him to be every single night."
Johnson followed with 17 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Crayton chipped in with 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.
The Stars will return to action against USAO at 8 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
