OCU at Wayland Baptist women's basketball preview

Stars, Flying Queens rank in top 11 in NAIA in points per game

THE MATCHUP: High-octane offenses and tradition-rich programs collide as Oklahoma City University pays a visit to Sooner Athletic Conference rival Wayland Baptist (Texas).

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU pummeled Southwestern Christian 82-49 on Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (16-2, 13-1 SAC) posted their seventh 30-point win of the season.
Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a 6-foot-2 junior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa, rang up 20 points, 18 rebounds and two assists. She notched her fifth double-double of the season. Coulibaly provides OCU with 13.0 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.33 steals per contest.
Cara Pugh, a 6-2 senior from Oklahoma City, tallied 16 points and four 3-pointers. She brought her career total to 610 points and helped OCU to a 31-3 advantage in bench points. Pugh compiles 10.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.28 steals a game. Yvonte Neal, a 5-7 junior from Spring Valley, Calif., contributed 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals. She matched her season high of four steals against Northwood (Texas) on Jan. 6. Neal averages 16.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists an outing.

The Stars slid to sixth in the last national ratings. OCU has been ranked in the top 10 in every poll since March 11, 2009 and made the top 25 in all 173 polls since 1999-2000. OCU owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2012.
SAC coaches predicted the Stars would win the league title. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 14 times, including last season when the Stars became the 10th SAC team to go unbeaten in league play. OCU has gone 129-11 in league play over the past six-plus seasons.
OCU has a 34-18 advantage in the all-time series vs. Wayland Baptist. The Stars pulled away from Wayland Baptist for a 78-68 win on Jan. 2 at Abe Lemons Arena. Neal accumulated 19 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

ABOUT THE FLYING QUEENS: Wayland Baptist squashed Southwestern Christian 76-53 on Thursday in Plainview, Texas. Wayland Baptist (14-10, 11-4 SAC) outscored Southwestern Christian 30-6 in the game's opening minutes.
Iesha Greer, a 6-foot junior, picked up 17 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. Greer gathers 10.4 points and 8.6 rebounds a game. Angeleigh Davis, a 5-9 senior, had 12 points, four rebounds and three steals. Davis averages 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.71 steals.
Wayland Baptist, which has been receiving votes in the national rankings, ranks second in defensive rebounds in the NAIA. Wayland Baptist tied for fourth in the preseason league coaches' poll.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Latricia Trammell owns a 109-82 record in six seasons as a college head coach. She reeled off a 28-4 record and became conference coach of the year in her first season as OCU head coach in 2012-13. Trammell returned to OCU last season after serving as Western State (Colo.) head coach from 2007-12. As a head coach, Trammell has coached three all-Americans and 17 all-conference selections, including the co-SAC player of the year, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the year and RMAC West Division freshman of the year. Trammell was assistant coach at OCU from 2005-07. As an assistant at OCU from 2005-07, Trammell mentored the Stars' first WNBA draftee, Mariam Sy of the Washington Mystics, 10 all-conference choices, the SAC player of the year, SAC newcomer of the year and four all-Americans. Trammell also spent time as head coach at Midwest City High School and Denton Bill Ryan High School (Texas).
Alesha Robertson is in her first season as Wayland Baptist coach. She spent the past two seasons as head girls' basketball coach at Lubbock Christian High School, guiding the Lady Eagles to the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) Class 3A state championship this past season. The four-time all-state player helped Plainview High School Lady Bulldogs win three consecutive Class 4A state titles from 2001-03, then went on to play four seasons for Texas Tech.
