OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University hammered Southwestern Christian 82-49 Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked No. 6 in NAIA Division I women's basketball, got 20 points and a season-high 18 rebounds from junior Ouleymatou Coulibaly and cruised to the 33-point victory. The win moves OCU to 16-2 overall and 13-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
"I was really proud her," OCU coach Latricia Trammell said of Coulibaly. "She ran the floor well and had a passion for getting rebounds. Eighteen rebounds are hard to get especially with 20 points. This was probably one of her best performances, and I'm glad to see her coming around."
The Stars started the game on a 7-0 run and built a 12-4 advantage with 14:49 remaining in the half.
Southwestern Christian countered with a 7-0 run of its own and cut the OCU lead to one at the 13:15 mark.
Yvonte Neal buried a jumper at the 6:20 mark to spark a 16-3 run and give the Stars their largest lead of the half at 39-19. Coulibaly and Cara Pugh fueled the run with six and five points respectively.
Neal converted a pair of free throws with 1:13 to go in the half and gave OCU a 42-22 lead at the break.
The Stars' second unit outscored the Lady Eagles bench 17-1 in the frame. OCU shot 46 percent from the floor while holding Southwestern Christian to 34 percent shooting.
OCU stretched its lead to 56-29 at the 13:21 mark of the second half after a quick 8-0 run. Six of the Stars' eight points during the run came in the paint.
The Stars maintained their double-digit advantage and cruised to the 82-49 victory.
OCU outrebounded Southwestern Christian 46-23 and outscored the Lady Eagles 18-2 in second-chance points. The Stars scored 34 points in the paint and 21 points off turnovers on the night.
"I thought we handled the adversity well," Trammell said. "We had a lot of fouls called on us and we played through that. I thought we rebounded well, and our bench was productive."
Coulibaly's 20 points and 18 rebounds paced the Stars' attack. Pugh followed with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the 3-point line, and Neal added 15 points, four steals and three assists.
The Stars will return to action against Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hucherson Center in Plainview, Texas.
