OCU vs. Wayland Baptist women's basketball preview

Stars return home to tangle with league rival Wayland Baptist

THE MATCHUP: No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University takes on Wayland Baptist (Texas) in the Stars' first home test against a league opponent.

ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars charged past Texas Wesleyan 84-69 on Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas. OCU (4-1, 1-0 Sooner Athletic Conference) finished with a flourish by outscoring the Lady Rams 23-9 in the final 10:50.
Rateska Brown, a 5-foot-6 senior from Alvin, S.C., accumulated 30 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and seven 3-pointers. Brown reached 30 points and seven treys for the second consecutive outing. Brown posts 24.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.00 steals per contest.
Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a 6-2 senior from Bamako Mali, West Africa, provided OCU with 25 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots while sinking 12 of 20 shots from the field. Coulibaly's 12 baskets were a single-game career high. Coulibaly records 19.4 points and 7.6 rebounds while hitting 60.3 percent from the floor. Kara Partridge, a 5-7 freshman from Midwest City, Okla., had 12 points and four rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Partridge hit double digits in scoring for the second game in a row. Partridge averages 6.2 points and 2.4 rebounds a game.

The Stars are ranked No. 1 in the preseason NAIA rankings. OCU has been ranked in the top 10 in every poll since March 11, 2009 and made the top 25 in all 179 polls since 1999-2000. OCU owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014.
SAC coaches predicted the Stars would win the league title. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 15 times, including the last five in a row.
OCU has a 34-19 overall record against Wayland Baptist. The Flying Queens dealt the Stars an 88-77 setback Feb. 15, 2014 in Plainview, Texas.

ABOUT THE FLYING QUEENS: Wayland Baptist opened SAC play with a 76-61 victory over Southwestern Christian on Thursday in Bethany, Okla. Wayland Baptist (4-3, 1-0 SAC) erased a 10-point deficit.
Stephanie Afunugo, a 5-11 junior, tallied 17 points and six rebounds. Afunugo averages 17.9 points and 7.1 rebounds a game. Latericka Anderson, a 5-10 senior, had 14 points, 13 rebounds and two steals. Anderson contributes 10.9 points and 9.0 rebounds a game.
Wayland Baptist received votes in the NAIA rankings before the season. Conference coaches put Wayland at fourth place in the preseason SAC poll.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Latricia Trammell was the 2014 NAIA Division I Phyllis Holmes coach of the year. Trammell has a 59-9 record in her third season as OCU head coach. She guided the Stars to a 16-0 record in conference play in 2012-13. She was OCU assistant to Rob Edmisson in 2005-07, then became Western State (Colo.) head coach from 2007-12. Trammell's college head-coaching record is 124-85 in her eighth year. Trammell has coached three all-Americans and 17 all-conference selections, including the co-SAC player of the year, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the year and RMAC West Division freshman of the year. As an assistant at OCU, Trammell mentored the Stars' first WNBA draftee, Mariam Sy of the Washington Mystics, 10 all-conference choices, the SAC player of the year, SAC newcomer of the year and four all-Americans.
Alesha Robertson-Ellis has a 24-15 record as Wayland Baptist coach. Ellis guided Wayland Baptist to an appearance in the NAIA Tournament last season. She took Lubbock Christian High School (Texas) to the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) Class 3A state championship prior to becoming the Wayland coach. The four-time all-state player helped Plainview High School (Texas) win three consecutive Class 4A state titles from 2001-03, then went on to play four seasons for Texas Tech.
