OCU vs. Wayland Baptist men’s basketball preview

Stars return home for second straight SAC opponent

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University looks to get back on track against Wayland Baptist (Texas) after a slipup in its 2014-15 Sooner Athletic Conference opener.

ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars fell 92-90 to Texas Wesleyan on Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas. OCU (3-3, 0-1) scored 30 bench points in the game. Texas Wesleyan overcame a 12-point deficit and took the lead for good on a Demarcus Richardson free throw with 28 seconds left.
R.J. McGhee, a 6-foot-6 senior from Baton Rouge, La., led the charge with 27 points and six assists. McGhee was 4-of-9 shooting from the 3-point line and added a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. He averages 23.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.
Evan White, a 6-4 junior from San Antonio, had a breakout game for the Stars, providing a season-high 23 points and hit five 3-pointers. White supplies OCU with 7.0 points a game. Gary Inglett, a 6-6 senior from Ardmore, Okla., grabbed seven rebounds and added 13 points and three assists. Inglett picks up 13.7 points and 11.2 rebounds a game.

The Stars received votes in the preseason NAIA Division I rankings. OCU has been predicted to take fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference in the preseason. OCU has won six national championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
OCU owns a 40-11 record in the all-time series with Wayland Baptist. The two teams split games last season with the home team winning each game. In the last meeting, Wayland Baptist topped the Stars 109-81 on Feb. 15 in Plainview, Texas.
 
ABOUT THE PIONEERS: Wayland Baptist last edged off Southwestern Christian 76-72 on Thursday in Bethany, Okla. The Pioneers (8-0, 1-0) shot 50.0 percent from the field and forced Southwestern Christian into 25 turnovers.
Royal Crouch, a 6-4 senior, was the game's leading scorer with 26 points and added six rebounds. Crouch is the Pioneers leading scorer, averaging 18.8 points per game on 59.6 percent shooting from the floor. Robert Waters, a 6-foot senior, scored 11 points and dished 10 assists. Jordan Johnson, a 6-4 junior, pulled down 11 rebounds and provided five assists. Johnson ranks fifth in assists in the NAIA averaging 6.1 assists per game.
Wayland Baptist is ranked No. 21 in the NAIA and is slotted to take second in the SAC.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps owns a 48-41 record in his fourth season as OCU coach. He led the Stars to the SAC Tournament title and an NAIA Division I Tournament appearance in 2012-13. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of five conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 24-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Matt Garnett enters his third season as Wayland Baptist's head coach. During the 2013-14 season Garnett led the Pioneers to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time since 2008. Wayland went 23-11 on the year and finished the season ranked 22nd in the NAIA Coaches Poll. The Pioneers finished the regular season second in the SAC and narrowly missed out on a conference championship after advancing to the SAC Tournament championship game.
