OCU at Texas Wesleyan women’s basketball preview

Stars own 6-0 record against Texas Wesleyan

THE MATCHUP: No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University travels to Texas Wesleyan to open Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Fans can get free admission to the game by bringing a canned food item for the SAC's holiday food drive.

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU (3-1) collected a pair of wins over 2014 national-tournament teams, Cumberlands (Ky.) and MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.), in the Oklahoma Baptist Holiday Classic over the weekend.
Rateska Brown, a 5-foot-6 senior, combined for 55 points in the two games, including a season-high 31 in the 78-63 win against 16th-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene. Brown collected her first Sooner Athletic Conference player of the week honor Monday. She averages 23.3 points per game while shooting 52.2 percent (35-for-67) from the field.
Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a 6-2 senior, combined for 32 points, including her Stars career high of 28 points against Cumberlands. Coulibaly averages 18.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game while shooting 93.3 percent (14-for-15) at the free-throw line.

The Stars are ranked No. 1 in the preseason NAIA rankings. OCU has been ranked in the top 10 in every poll since March 11, 2009 and made the top 25 in all 179 polls since 1999-2000. OCU owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014.
SAC coaches predicted the Stars would win the league title. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 15 times, including the last five in a row.
OCU dominates the all-time record, 6-0 against Texas Wesleyan. The Stars beat Texas Wesleyan twice last season, winning the final matchup 60-51 in Fort Worth, Texas. Coulibaly led the Stars with 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

ABOUT THE LADY RAMS: Texas Wesleyan (6-3) last fell to Texas Woman's 70-65 on Nov. 25 in Denton, Texas. Texas Wesleyan scored 21 points on 20 turnovers by Texas Woman's. The Rams shot 91.7 percent (11-for-12) from the free-throw line.
Katelynn Threats, a 5-11 sophomore, led all scorers with 18 points and snatched eight rebounds. Threats leads the Lady Rams in scoring averaging 14 points a game. Kashyla Fields and Caitlin Boal both contributed 13 points against Texas Woman's. Fields added three rebounds, while Boal grabbed four rebounds.
The Lady Rams were picked to finish sixth in the SAC preseason coaches' poll.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Latricia Trammell was the 2014 NAIA Division I Phyllis Holmes coach of the year. Trammell has a 58-9 record in her third season as OCU head coach. She guided the Stars to a 16-0 record in conference play in 2012-13. She was OCU assistant to Rob Edmisson in 2005-07, then became Western State (Colo.) head coach from 2007-12. Trammell's college head-coaching record is 123-85 in her eighth year. Trammell has coached three all-Americans and 17 all-conference selections, including the co-SAC player of the year, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the year and RMAC West Division freshman of the year. As an assistant at OCU, Trammell mentored the Stars' first WNBA draftee, Mariam Sy of the Washington Mystics, 10 all-conference choices, the SAC player of the year, SAC newcomer of the year and four all-Americans.
Bill Franey enters his third season as head coach of Texas Wesleyan. Franey owns a 61-30 record as the Lady Rams head coach. Last season he guided Texas Wesleyan to a 15-16 record in its first season in the SAC.
