OCU vs. Central Oklahoma men’s basketball preview

Stars open 2014-15 regular season in Abe Lemons Arena

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University hosts Central Oklahoma for the Stars' first game of the regularseason.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, while OCU students, faculty and staff are allowed into all regular-season OCU athletics events for free with their ID. For the OCU athletics visitors guide, click here.

ABOUT THE STARS: Midwestern State (Texas) had a second-half surge that lifted the Mustangs to a 112-82 exhibition win over Oklahoma City onSaturday at D.L Ligon Coliseum. OCU had five players score in double digits.

Terence Bonhomme, a 6-foot sophomore from from St. Martinville, La., led the Stars scoring 18 points and grabbed three rebounds.

R.J. McGhee, a 6-6 senior from Baton Rouge, La., paced the Stars with five rebounds and added 14 points.

The Stars received votes in the preseason NAIA ratings. Oklahoma City has been projected to finish fourth in the Sooner Athletic Conference by league coaches. OCU owns six NAIA national championships won in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.

OCU owns a 25-22 lead in the all-time series against Central Oklahoma. Central Oklahoma won both meetings between the squads a season ago.


ABOUT THE BRONCHOS: Central Oklahoma finished 20-10, 11-8 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association last season. Central Oklahoma's season closed with an 84-72 loss to Missouri Southern State in the MIAA Tournament finals.

Central Oklahoma returns three starters from a season ago. Seth Heckart returns for his junior season. Last year Heckart averaged 10.6 points and 2.6 assists a game.

Cal Andrews also returns for his junior campaign. Andrews started 25 of their 30 games and averaged 11 points a game.

In the preseason, Central Oklahoma was picked to finish sixth in the MIAA.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps owns a 45-38 record entering his fourth season as OCU coach. He led the Stars to the SAC Tournament title and an NAIA Division I Tournament appearance in 2012-13. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of five conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 24-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.

Terry Evans enters his 13th season with Central Oklahoma. Evans is 243-114 in 12 years at UCO, ranking first in winning percentage (.683) and second in wins in program history.
