OCU vs. Langston men's basketball preview

Stars return to Abe Lemons Arena

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University squares off with nearby rival Langston to continue nonconference play.

ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars took an 84-65 loss to St. Thomas (Texas) on Saturday in Houston. OCU (2-1) hit 50 percent of its second-half field-goal attempts.
Gary Inglett, a 6-foot-6 senior from Ardmore, Okla., notched his second double-double of the season with 20 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and four steals Saturday. Inglett hit 7 of his 11 shots from the floor. Inglett records 14.7 points, 14.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.67 steals per contest.
R.J. McGhee, a 6-6 senior from Baton Rouge, La., produced 15 points and four assists on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. McGhee rates seventh nationally with 24.0 points per game while adding 3.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists a game. Dorion Gigger, a 6-4 sophomore from Oklahoma City, contributed nine points, nine rebounds and four assists. Gigger averages 8.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
Oklahoma City's 20.7 assists and 33.3 defensive rebounds per game rank seventh in NAIA Division I. To see how the Stars rate statistically among the NAIA, click here.
The Stars received votes in the preseason NAIA Division I rankings. OCU has been predicted to take fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference in the preseason. OCU has won six national championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
OCU has built a 19-3 record against Langston over the years. The last time these teams met, the Stars prevailed 73-70 on Nov. 6, 2013 at Abe Lemons Arena. Jamaal Crayton's 3-point play with 15 seconds remaining made the difference.
 
ABOUT THE LIONS: Langston popped Southwestern Christian 71-61 on Nov. 1 in Bethany, Okla. Langston (1-0) lost the rebounding battle 35-30, but held Southwestern Christian to 38.8 percent shooting from the field – including 31.8 percent in the first half.
Karon Abraham, a 5-10 junior, topped Langston with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor. Abraham transferred to Langston after playing two seasons at Robert Morris, where he averaged 13.9 points a game as a sophomore in 2010-11. Curtis Jones, a 6-2 junior, had 15 points while sinking 6 of 7 shots from the field.
Langston has been slotted to take sixth place in the preseason Red River Athletic Conference poll.    
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps owns a record of 47-39 in his fourth season as OCU coach. He led the Stars to the SAC Tournament title and an NAIA Division I Tournament appearance in 2012-13. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 23-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Stan Holt is in his debut season as a head coach with Langston. Holt's previous coaching experience includes being a graduate assistant for Southern California. Holt had spent the past four years working in private business.
