OCU at Langston women’s basketball preview

Stars take to the road to open 2014-15 season

Albany Anderson ranked 39th in NAIA Division I with a 1.67-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio last season.

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University travels to Langston to for the Stars' first game of the 2014-15 regular season. The contest will be a rematch from the first round of the 2014 NAIA Division I Tournament.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU hung tough in exhibition games against NCAA Division I opponents Texas A&M and Texas. The Stars lost 74-51 against A&M on Saturday in College Station, Texas, and 102-56 against Texas on Sunday in Austin, Texas.
Rateska Brown, a 5-foot-6 guard from Alvin, S.C., posted a game-high 30 points and two steals against Texas. She made seven of 12 shots beyond the 3-point line. Brown supplied OCU with 24.5 points a game in the two exhibition games.
Janay Borum, a 5-2 senior from Upper Marlsboro, Md., led the Stars with five rebounds, six assists and three steals against Texas. Yvonte Neal, a 5-7 senior from Spring Valley, Calif., added eight points Sunday.
The Stars are ranked No. 1 in the preseason NAIA rankings. OCU has been ranked in the top 10 in every poll since March 11, 2009 and made the top 25 in all 179 polls since 1999-2000. OCU owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014.
SAC coaches predicted the Stars would win the league title. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 15 times, including the last five in a row.
OCU holds a 28-1 advantage in the all-time series against Langston. The Stars last won 79-71 in a first-round NAIA Tournament bout March 19, 2014 in Frankfort, Ky., eliminating Langston from the tourney.
 
ABOUT THE LADY LIONS: Langston started the 2014-15 season 3-0 with wins over Southwestern Christian, Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) and St. Gregory's. The Lady Lions knocked off St. Gregory's 89-74 on Wednesday in Shawnee, Okla.
Lynette Holmes, a 6-foot senior, leads the charge for the Lions, averaging 18.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Against St. Gregory's Holmes dropped 30 points, while making 11 of 18 field goals including 4-for-7 behind the 3-point line. She also collected eight rebounds and four assists.
T'Keya Mason, a 5-9 junior, is second on the team averaging 11.0 points and 5.6 rebounds a game. At the win at St. Gregory's Mason added nine points and six rebounds.
Langston stands 24th in the preseason national ratings. Langston is expected to finish third in the Red River Athletic Conference.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Latricia Trammell was the 2014 NAIA Division I Phyllis Holmes coach of the year. Trammell has a 55-8 record in two years as OCU head coach. She guided the Stars to a 16-0 record in conference play in 2012-13. She was OCU assistant to Rob Edmisson in 2005-07, then became Western State (Colo.) head coach from 2007-12. Trammell's college head-coaching record is 120-84 in seven years. Trammell has coached three all-Americans and 17 all-conference selections, including the co-SAC player of the year, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the year and RMAC West Division freshman of the year. As an assistant at OCU, Trammell mentored the Stars' first WNBA draftee, Mariam Sy of the Washington Mystics, 10 all-conference choices, the SAC player of the year, SAC newcomer of the year and four all-Americans.
Cheryl Miller enters her first year as head coach for Langston. From 1993-95, Miller was the head coach of the University of Southern California women's team, going 42-14 with two NCAA Tournament berths.  From 1997-2000, she was the head coach of the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, leading the team to a 70-52 record and the 1998 WNBA Finals. Miller was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995, FIBA Hall of Fame for international play in 2010 and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999. Miller also boasts gold medals from the 1983 Pan American Games, 1984 Olympics and 1986 Goodwill Games.
