Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City University took a 25-20, 25-19, 25-20 loss to top 25-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Friday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Meghan Irwin and Kristen Macy topped the Stars with 16 kills each. Oklahoma City went to 18-10, 10-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, while Wayland Baptist, ranked 19th in NAIA volleyball, moved to 18-9, 11-2 in the SAC.
The Stars' five-match win streak came to an end. OCU had won its last five home contests.
Macy, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., added 12 digs, and Irwin, a senior from Arlington, Texas, chipped in eight digs and two blocks. OCU's Taylor Chase, a junior from Yukon, Okla., handed out 36 assists to go with four digs and two blocks.
Kelley Shiels, a senior from Edmond, Okla., posted 12 digs, while Chazmin Franklin, a junior from Bay City, Texas, contributed four kills, two digs and two blocks for the Stars.
Macy had two kills and an ace to stake OCU to an early 4-1 lead. Wayland Baptist pulled away from a 17-17 tie with four points in a row on the way to taking the first set.
Wayland Baptist took a 17-8 lead on Shahala Hawkins' kill in the second set. In the third set, Irwin's kill helped OCU get a 4-2 edge. Chelsey Driskill had a kill to tie the set 6-6 and touch off a 5-0 Wayland run.
Hawkins finished with 14 kills. She entered the match leading the NAIA in kills per set with 5.44.
Oklahoma City continues league play against St. Gregory's at 7 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
