Four Stars finish third in Midland Warrior Classic Open

OCU's Franco, Gaines, Muskrat and Sivertsen notched third-place finishes Saturday

Derek Sivertsen reached the semifinals and finished third at 174 pounds in the Midland Warrior Classic Open.
FREMONT, Neb. – Oklahoma City University's Teagan Franco, Adrian Gaines, Hunter Muskrat and Derek Sivertsen all notched third-place finishes in their respective weight classes at the Midland Warrior Classic Open Saturday.
Gaines, a freshman from Lawton, Okla., dropped his first match to Tim Peskar of Midland (Neb.) but won five straight matches to finish third at 125 pounds. Gaines posted pins of Max Klarenbeek of Northwestern (Iowa) and Skylar Goepfert of Midland before picking up a 3-0 decision over Javier Vieyra of Augustana (S.D.) in the third-place match.
Muskrat, a senior from Stilwell, Okla., and fellow Star Zach Skates, a sophomore from Broken Arrow, Okla., competed at 157. Skates topped Mitchell Rechtzigel of Augustana and John Lynch of Northwestern to reach the semifinals before falling to Archie Colgan of Wyoming. Muskrat dropped his first match to Zach Fishman of Northwestern but won back-to-back matches against Rechtzigel and Skates to reach the third-place match where he defeated Fishman.
Sivertsen, a freshman from Moore, Okla., pinned Jacob Schieffer of Midland and edged Logan Henning of Augustana to reach the 174 semifinals. After falling to McCoy Newberg of Nebraska, Sivertsen pinned Jeff Nielsen of Augustana to finish third.
Franco, a senior from Spanaway, Wash., and OCU's Cody Sivertsen, a junior from Moore, Okla., both reached the 197 semifinals. Franco beat Lane Lettau of Augustana and Siverstsen pinned Ryan Brunison of Wayne State (Mich.) to reach the semifinals where both wrestlers lost. Franco pinned Northwestern's Forrest Marx and Sivertsen pinned Lettau to reach the third-place match where Franco topped Sivertsen 6-2.
At 149, freshman Ricky McCarty, of Lawton, Okla., topped Klay Kasik of Nebraska-Kearney and pinned Tanner Wilkens of Midland to reach the semifinals where he fell to Derrick Weller of Lindenwood (Mo.).
Freshman Lino Gomez, of El Paso, Texas, beat Northwestern's Ely Sharkey and Lindenwood's Chris Sanders to reach the semifinals at 141. Fellow Star Travon Smith, a junior from Shreveport, La., lost his first match but won three straight and reached the semifinals of the losers' bracket.
The Stars will return to action in the National Wrestling Coaches' Association National Duals on Friday in Des Moines, Iowa.
