Southwestern Assemblies of God slips past Stars 65-62

SAGU completes season sweep of OCU

OKLAHOMA CITY – Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) kept Oklahoma City University at bay in a 65-62 victory Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
OCU missed on two 3-point attempts in the final 32 seconds of the game as Southwestern Assemblies, ranked fourth in NAIA Division I men's basketball, improved to 18-2, 10-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Stars went to 10-8, 6-5 in league play.
The Stars fell to 3-3 in games decided by three points or less this season. Four of OCU's last five games have been in that category, while the fifth game went overtime. Southwestern Assemblies of God won 68-63 over OCU on Jan. 13 in Waxahachie, Texas.
Thursday's game featured 20 lead changes and 11 ties. Southwestern Assemblies of God's largest lead was five points, while OCU led by as many as seven.
"At the end of the day, when it's this close, it's the coach's fault," OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. "It comes down to the coach. I have to do a better job. This is not my players' fault, this falls all on me, Coach Phelps."
Jonathan Walter hit two free throws to put SAGU up three points with 45 seconds left. R.J. McGhee missed a trey with 32 seconds left that Southwestern Assemblies rebounded. Dominique Rambo misfired on a one-and-one free-throw chance with 24 seconds to go that Ivan Matip rebounded. Jamil Donovan missed on a 3-point try with five seconds remaining for OCU.
McGhee, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., topped OCU with 20 points. Jamaal Crayton, a senior from Augusta, La., put together 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Stars.
OCU held SAGU to 38.7 percent shooting from the field and 6-for-25 shooting from 3-point range. OCU limited its turnovers to nine, but Southwestern Assemblies of God still cashed in those for 17 points. Southwestern Assemblies had the edge in rebounding 44-36.
Crayton and Kaleb Smith nailed 3s, while McGhee sank free throws to build a 36-29 lead late in the first half.
Caleb Gentry hit a 3-pointer that gave Southwestern Assemblies of God an early 6-1 edge for its biggest lead.
The Stars meet Northwood (Texas) at 5 p.m. Saturday in Cedar Hill, Texas.
