Central Oklahoma registers 30-9 win over OCU

Franco, Sivertsens provide Stars with individual victories

Teagan Franco improved to 10-7 on the season.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Teagan Franco, Cody Sivertsen and Derek Sivertsen accounted for Oklahoma City University's wins in Central Oklahoma's 30-9 dual victory Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma City (5-8) rose to 12th in the latest NAIA wrestling rankings. Central Oklahoma, ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, improved to 7-4.
Five Stars were in the individual ratingsZach Skates third at 157 pounds, Derek Sivertsen fifth at 174, Cody Sivertsen eighth at 184, Ricky McCarty 10th at 149 and Adrian Gaines 14th at 125.
"We got ranked 12th after this last weekend at Missouri Valley College, and we wrestled very well in the tournament," OCU coach Archie Randall said. "We placed eight kids in the tournament and got three to the finals. The three that were in the finals were two freshmen and a sophomore."
Central Oklahoma had six seniors in its dual lineup. Central's three top-ranked individuals – Jordan Basks, Cory Dauphin and Chris Watson – scored two major-decision victories and helped their team build a 30-0 dual advantage. Dauphin prevailed 13-4 over Skates at 157 in the premier matchup of the night.
"UCO has got a really good team right now," Randall said. "They're senior heavy, and we're young. We didn't do very well against their mature wrestlers. I think it paid off for us. I think we're going to be a better team in the end."
The Stars' Derek Sivertsen tallied a takedown and a third-period escape to pull off a 3-2 win over Zach Aylor at 174. Derek's brother Cody had two takedowns and an escape for a 5-1 victory over Kasey Wilcox 5-1 in the 184-pound bout. Wilcox is the younger brother of John Wilcox, who was a two-time all-American and assistant coach for the Stars.
At 197, Teagan Franco came up with an escape and a takedown in the third period to edge Garrett Henshaw 3-2.
"We're a young, young, young team, and they're wrestling really hard," Randall said.
"They're getting better every week, and that's the most important thing. We have five kids ranked now nationally, which is pretty impressive. We still have four duals left to go."
The Stars face Colorado State-Pueblo at 8 p.m. CST Jan. 30 in Pueblo, Colo.
