Stars edge Southwestern Assemblies of God 77-65

OCU picks up fifth straight win, stays unbeaten in SAC

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University held off Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 77-65 on Monday at the Sheaffer Center.
The Stars, ranked No. 3 in NAIA Division I women's basketball, got double-doubles from Autumn Huffman and Kayla MacKenzie and clutch 3-point shooting down the stretch to pick up their fifth-straight victory. OCU improved to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play with the win.
OCU opened the game on a 10-2 run. MacKenzie and Huffman each poured in four points to fuel the run and put the Stars on top with 15 minutes and 49 seconds left in the first half.
The Lady Lions answered with a 9-2 run and stayed within striking distance for the rest of the first half. Nia Wilson led the SAGU charge with 18 first-half points.
The Lady Lions cut the Stars' lead to two, but Huffman scored in the paint to give OCU a 42-38 lead at the break.
A 3-pointer from MacKenzie followed by a basket in the paint from Albany Anderson put OCU on top by eight points at the 14:44 mark of the second half.
The Lady Lions responded with a 9-0 run and took their first lead of the game with 8:37 to go.
Yvonte Neal buried a 3-pointer and sparked OCU to a 19-4 run to finish the game and give the Stars the 77-65 victory. 3-point jumpers from Autumn Lau, MacKenzie and Neal put the Stars over the top.
Lau led the OCU charge with 17 points, six rebounds and two blocks off the bench. Neal followed with 16 points and five rebounds and MacKenzie and Huffman each poured in 14 points. Huffman added 13 rebounds while MacKenzie passed out 12 assists on the night.
The Stars will return to action against Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Noble Complex in Shawnee, Okla.
