OCU falls in SAC women's tournament 77-64

Second-ranked Stars drop decision to fourth-ranked Lubbock Christian

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Lubbock Christian (Texas) knocked off Oklahoma City University 77-64 on Saturday at the Noble Complex in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament championship game.
Desiree Jeffries, a senior from Oklahoma City, led the Stars with 22 points, five rebounds and five assists. OCU, ranked second in NAIA Division I, went to 26-3, while fourth-ranked Lubbock Christian moved to 29-3.
Lubbock Christian picked up the SAC's automatic berth into the NAIA Division I Tournament on March 13-19 in Frankfort, Ky. OCU will await an at-large bid when the tournament pairings will be revealed 7 p.m. Wednesday in an announcement show broadcast live over www.naia.org. Fans can see the show at the Leichter Room above Abe Lemons Arena.
OCU's 25-game winning streak came to an end. OCU had a 47-game win streak against NAIA competition snapped.
Jessica Lankston, a senior from Kansas, Okla., scored 10 points while downing two 3-pointers for OCU. Jeffries, Lankston and Katie Hall of the Stars were honored on the all-tournament team.
Kelsey Hoppel topped Lubbock Christian with 30 points while nailing four treys. Tournament most valuable player Kelsey Canavan posted 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Autumn Huffman had four points as the Stars reeled off eight unanswered points to build a 17-11 lead with 12:08 left in the first half. Kayla MacKenzie sank a free throw to cap OCU's run.
Hoppel scored seven points during a 14-0 run that put Lubbock Christian ahead 30-21 at the 5:30 mark of the first.  
OCU cut its deficit to two points twice during the second half. Lankston nailed a long jumper to slice Lubbock Christian's lead to 50-49 with 11:40 remaining in the game. Canavan answered with a jumper as Lubbock Christian scored the game's next seven points.
Lankston sank a trey and a jumper, then Jeffries scored to bring OCU to within one point at 57-56 with 7:33 to go. Hoppel countered with a 3, then Canavan had a 3-point play to keep Lubbock Christian in front en route to its first SAC Tournament title.
