OCU vs. John Brown men's basketball preview

Fourth-ranked John Brown visits Abe Lemons Arena

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University entertains Sooner Athletic Conference leader John Brown (Ark.), ranked fourth in NAIA Division I.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, while OCU students, faculty and staff are allowed into all regular-season OCU athletics events for free with their ID.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City University dropped a 60-57 decision to USAO on Thursday in Chickasha, Okla. The Stars (12-8, 5-7 SAC) took a 55-54 edge on Terry Johnson's free throw with 2:58 left, but USAO regained the lead for good on Graham Faulkner's 3-pointer.
Charlton Jones, a 6-foot-1 senior from Katy, Texas, led the Stars with 23 points, eight rebounds and three assists while pocketing two steals. Jones nailed 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. Jones produces 14.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.45 steals a game.
Terry Johnson, a 6-foot junior from Chicago, added seven points, four rebounds and three steals. Johnson records 14.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.50 steals per contest. Kaleb Smith, a 6-5 junior from Choctaw, Okla., and Elhadji Wade, a 6-9 senior from Dhakar, Senegal, each scored six points.
OCU ranks sixth in NAIA Division I with a 74.2 percent team free-throw percentage, while Jamil Donovan rates second nationally with a 3.65-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. To see how the Stars rank among national statistics, click here.
The Stars were projected to finish fifth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference in the preseason. OCU owns six national championships won in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
OCU has gone 24-14 against John Brown over the years. John Brown knocked off the Stars 66-61 on Jan. 3 in Siloam Springs, Ark., in the SAC opener for both teams. Jones and Johnson each scored 17 points.
 
ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES: John Brown knocked off Rogers State 81-74 on Monday in Claremore, Okla. John Brown (21-4, 10-1 SAC) got free throws by D'Shon Taylor and a layup from Kofi Josephs to break a 64-64 tie at the 4:17 mark.
Josephs, a 6-5 freshman, set career highs with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Josephs provides John Brown with 10.2 points and 3.7 rebounds a game. Coleson Rakestraw, a 6-2 senior, had 12 points and five rebounds. Rakestraw averages 11.6 points and 3.9 rebounds a game.
John Brown holds the fourth spot in the latest rankings. John Brown was picked to finish third in the SAC in the preseason.
The John Brown University Alumni Association has offered to pay the admission of JBU alumni who come to Saturday's games.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps is in the midst in his second season as OCU coach. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 23-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Clark Sheehy has a 131-67 record in his fifth year at John Brown and a 159-96 career record in seven years as a head coach. The son of former John Brown coach John Sheehy, Clark became a two-time all-conference selection playing for his father at John Brown. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Sheehy spent two seasons at the helm at Fresno Pacific (Calif.) and five seasons assisting at NCAA Division I Texas State.
