Stars drop 77-72 decision to OBU

Johnson provides OCU with season-high 27 points

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma Baptist rallied for a 77-72 win over Oklahoma City University on Thursday at the Noble Complex.
Oklahoma Baptist, ranked 10th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, erased an 18-point deficit to improve to 23-6, 11-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU went to 13-10, 6-9 in the SAC.
Terry Johnson, a junior from Chicago, turned in 27 points, six rebounds and three assists for OCU. Johnson surpassed his previous season high of 26 points vs. USAO on Jan. 5 at Abe Lemons Arena. Troynell Adams, a senior from Chicago, added 16 points while hitting 7 of 10 shots from the field.
“I thought our kids played hard and competed,” OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. “At the end of the day, they got the ball where they wanted to. Doug Tolin is a very good coach who gets players who can help him win at a high level.”
Johnson provided OCU with a 44-26 advantage on a 3-pointer with 19:27 left in the game. Oklahoma Baptist answered with a 10-0 run as David Johnson had five of those points.
Adams nailed a jumper that put the Stars up 64-53 with 8:25 to go in the contest. Chase Adams ignited a 7-0 OBU splurge that zapped OCU's last double-digit lead of the game.
Terry Johnson's free throw put the Stars in front 70-67 with 3:18 remaining in the tilt. Cale Jackson sank two free throws, then Marques Anderson added free throws that put Oklahoma Baptist on top 71-70 with 1:42 showing.
Troynell Adams responded with a jumper that gave OCU a 72-71 edge with 1:25 left. David Johnson put OBU in front for good by nailing a 3-pointer for 74-72 OBU lead with 52.6 seconds remaining.
In the first half, Oklahoma Baptist went without a field goal for 5:22. After Anderson sank a bucket at the 9:31 mark, Oklahoma Baptist wouldn't get another basket until Clinton Houston's make with 4:09 to go in the first.
During that time, OCU went on a 15-1 run, going up 31-15 on two Terry Johnson free throws with 5:38 left in the first.
Oklahoma Baptist connected on 25.9 percent of its shots from the field in the first half, but improved that figure to 61.3 percent in the second half. OCU kept pace with a 52.9 percent field-goal percentage in the game.
The Stars take on Rogers State at 5 p.m. Saturday in Claremore, Okla., in the regular-season finale for both teams.
