Stars fall 5-1 to Bethany in season opener

OCU pitchers, Rachel Penner and Elizabeth Oberst, combine for nine strikeouts

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University dropped its season opener 5-1 to Bethany (Kan.) Friday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
The Stars, ranked fourth in NAIA softball, outhit the 23rd-ranked Swedes 5-3, but committed six errors to fall to 0-1 on the season.
Bethany jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with a bunt back to the pitcher that scored Ashley Montoya from third base.
The Swedes tacked on another run the top of the third when Brittany Lewis doubled to left field and drove in a run to make the score 2-0.
Emily Krienke hit into a double play in the bottom of the fifth, but Jamie Rateliff scored from third to cut the Bethany lead to 2-1.
Bethany plated three unearned runs in the top of the seventh to take the 5-1 victory.
Rachel Penner tossed 4.1 innings, allowed two hits and one earned run with four strikeouts but was saddled with the loss to move to 0-1 on the season.
Elizabeth Oberst pitched 2.2 innings in relief and allowed one hit with five strikeouts.
Kyndra Holasek went 2-for-3 to lead the Stars at the dish. Magean De La Torre, Jamie Rateliff and Drew Wright all finish with one hit apiece.
The Stars will return to action in a doubleheader against Williams Woods (Mo.) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Claremore, Okla.
