Six Stars place in Oklahoma City Open

Skates wins back-to-back 165-pound crowns for OCU

Zach Skates has placed in every tournament as a Star.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Zach Skates of Oklahoma City University repeated as Oklahoma City Open 165-pound champion Sunday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars' Hunter Muskrat finished third place at 157. In the freshman-sophomore division, OCU's Ricky McCarty took runner-up at 149, and Derek Sivertsen finished as 197-pound runner-up.
Also in the freshman-sophomore division, Josh Goepfert of the Stars made a fourth-place showing at 125, and Trevor Anderson picked up fourth at 149.
Skates, a sophomore from Broken Arrow, Okla., held off Sam Mehan, an unattached individual out of Oklahoma State, 3-2 to capture the title. Skates owns two open tournament titles wrestling for OCU.
As a Star, Skates has placed in all eight tournaments he's entered, including fifth place in the NAIA Championships to become an all-American last season. Skates is ranked fifth among NAIA 165-pounders.
Skates added a 13-4 major-decision win over Marc Backus of Wayland Baptist (Texas) and a 5-2 victory over Jordon Ward of Bethany (Kan.).
Muskrat, a senior from Stilwell, Okla., came away with a 6-4 win over Jeromy Davenport of Central Oklahoma to take third. Muskrat placed in a tournament for the third time in his OCU career.
Chris Koo of Oklahoma State knocked Muskrat into the consolation rounds with a 3-1 win. Muskrat responded with an 8-5 victory over Jared Sterling of Missouri Valley and a 3-1 win over Bernie Gonzales of Wayland Baptist.
OCU begins the dual season 7 p.m. Tuesday against Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.
