OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University posted a 102-58 wipeout of Langston on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena in the Capital City Classic.
Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a junior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa, hung 20 points and 11 rebounds on Langston. The Stars, ranked second in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 2-0.
OCU reached 100 points for the second time in a row. Coulibaly and Cara Pugh each produced double-doubles for the second consecutive game. Coulibaly hit 7 of her 10 shots from the field in 19 minutes of play.
Pugh, a senior from Oklahoma City, pitched in 16 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and three 3-pointers, while Autumn Huffman, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Stars.
OCU's Tommitrise Collins, a redshirt freshman from Macon, Ga., contributed 15 points and six rebounds, and Markeisha Johnson, a sophomore from Mansura, La., had 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Autumn Lau, a senior from Mount Wolf, Pa., picked up seven points, 13 rebounds, four assists and five blocked shots for the Stars.
The Stars piled up overwhelming advantages in rebounding (66-31), points in the paint (46-32), bench points (38-20), points off turnovers (33-18) and second-chance points (26-7). Langston committed 27 turnovers and struggled to 29.2 percent shooting from the floor.
"I think we fouled too much," OCU coach Latricia Trammell said. "We started playing more timid on the defensive end, and we gave them several easy baskets. I'm going to tell you, I thought we won the extra-effort battles like rebounding. I thought we had some nice effort from the entire team."
OCU cruised despite 27 turnovers and 44.9 percent shooting. The Stars improved their field-goal percentage to 58.6 percent in the second half. OCU benefited from 80 percent shooting from the free-throw line, hitting 36 of 45 free-throw tries.
"We forced 27 turnovers, but so did they," Trammell said. "That's something we take pride in is not turning that ball over. That's something we will talk about heading into tomorrow night's game."
Pugh scored eight points during a 13-0 OCU run that put the Stars in front 22-8. Pugh ignited the splurge with a pair of free throws and capped it with a 3-pointer with 8:52 left in the first.
OCU's largest margin came at the end of the contest at 44 points.
The Stars conclude play in the Capital City Classic against 15th-ranked Xavier (La.) at 7 p.m. Friday at Abe Lemons Arena.
