Skates of OCU captures Shorter Open crown

Seven Stars place in tournament

Ricky McCarty had two wins by fall Saturday.
ROME, Ga. – Zach Skates of Oklahoma City University took the 165-pound Shorter Open title Saturday at the Winthrop-King Centre.
Skates, a sophomore from Broken Arrow, Okla., captured his third open tournament title and placed in a tournament for the 10th consecutive time with OCU, ranked 18th in NAIA wrestling. Seven Stars placed in the Shorter Open.
Landon Carter picked up runner-up in the 184-pound weight class, while Adrian Gaines at 125 and James Landoll at 141 each placed third for OCU.
The Stars' Josh Goepfert at 125, Hunter Muskrat at 157 and Derek Sivertsen at 184 grabbed fourth-place showings.
At 165, Skates edged Santiago Martinez of Cumberlands (Ky.) 3-2 in the title bout. He advanced to the championship match with two technical-fall wins and a major-decision victory. Skates is ranked fifth among NAIA 165-pounders.
Carter, a sophomore from Manti, Utah, placed in a tournament for the first time as a Star. Carter pinned Trey Dobbs of Life (Ga.), then won twice by decision to get to the 184-pound championship. Terrence Smith of Shorter (Ga.) pinned Carter for the title.
OCU faces 17th-ranked Missouri Baptist at noon Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
