SHAWNEE, Okla. – Nationally-ranked Oklahoma Baptist eliminated Oklahoma City University from the Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball tournament 25-16, 28-26, 19-25, 25-22 on Friday at the Noble Complex.
Oklahoma Baptist, ranked seventh in the NAIA, will play 19th-rated Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 2 p.m. Saturday for the tournament title. OCU (19-14) had advanced to the tournament semifinal with a 25-16, 28-26, 19-25, 25-22 win over John Brown (Ark.).
"I've never been more proud to be this team's coach as I was today," OCU coach Nikki Dieball said. "We played with reckless abandon and left every ounce of ourselves on the floor. Our seniors played amazing today, and I felt like every one of our underclassmen played inspired for them."
Meghan Irwin, a junior from Arlington, Texas, topped the Stars with 12 kills and six blocks. Kristen Macy, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., compiled 11 kills and 14 digs, and Hannah Mitcham, a sophomore from Fort Worth, Texas, notched 35 assists, 10 digs and two aces for OCU.
Rachel Gabel added 10 kills and three blocks, while Tori Thomas picked up 14 digs for the Stars.
Tori Leisure provided OCU set point in the second set with a kill that gave her team a 25-24 edge. Irwin hammered a kill that put OCU ahead 26-25, but Oklahoma Baptist rallied to win the set.
The Stars built an 11-4 third-set advantage as Robison served up an ace during a 7-0 OCU run. Irwin had back-to-back kills to give OCU the set.
Against John Brown, Macy spearheaded OCU with 17 kills and 10 digs. Robison had 40 assists and eight digs, and Thomas, a redshirt freshman from Norman, Okla., scooped 22 digs. Gabel, a sophomore from Richardson, Texas, added nine kills and seven digs.
Macy nailed two kills that gave OCU a 5-1 first-set lead. John Brown rallied to tie the set 10-10, but Leisure answered with a pair of kills that helped the Stars pull ahead 14-10.
The Stars erased 21-19 and 24-22 deficits. Irwin and Mitcham posted kills to tie the set 24-24. Macy and Leisure finished the set with consecutive kills for OCU.
