OCU falls to ninth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist

Macy reaches double digits in kills for fourth consecutive contest

OKLAHOMA CITY – Nationally ranked Oklahoma Baptist dealt Oklahoma City University a 25-23, 25-18, 25-13 defeat Friday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Kristen Macy, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., led the Stars in kills for the fourth consecutive match with 10. Oklahoma Baptist, ranked ninth in NAIA volleyball, improved to 21-4, 8-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while OCU dropped to 12-8, 5-3.
Oklahoma Baptist picked up its 38th consecutive victory in conference play before the largest crowd to see an OCU home volleyball match (850).
Tori Leisure, a sophomore from Haslet, Texas, added seven kills, while Rachel Gabel, a sophomore from Richardson, Texas, led the Stars with 13 digs to go with six kills and two blocks.
Heather Watson, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., produced 14 assists and six digs, and Hannah Mitcham, a sophomore from Fort Worth, Texas, contributed 13 assists and nine digs for OCU. The Stars' Meghan Irwin, a junior from Arlington, Texas, added four kills and three blocks.
In the first set, OCU notched four points in a row to gain a 16-13 edge. Macy and Watson picked up kills during the Stars' run. Macy had back-to-back kills to give OCU a 19-15 lead.
Oklahoma Baptist rallied to take a 23-22 lead as Mikayla Diers and Kristin Pressley teamed on a block. Patricia Moura's kill put away the first set for OBU.
Valerie Stetzer's ace generated a 17-12 Oklahoma Baptist in the second set. Leisure's kill cut the Stars' deficit to 20-18, but Oklahoma Baptist answered with the final five points of the set. Pressley had two kills in that final push.
Pressley's block put Oklahoma Baptist in front 17-7 in the third set. Once Oklahoma Baptist got to match point at 24-10, OCU answered with three points in a row. Gabel and Irwin combined on a block, and Gabel socked a kill that cut OCU's deficit to 24-13.
The Stars meet Central Oklahoma at noon, then Langston at 2 p.m. Saturday in Edmond, Okla. Follow the matches via live stats.
